What is the purpose of media codes and how do they work? Is there only special codes to look for on media in order for best quality? I see a list of media codes in the forum posted by dogbomb, but I just don't understand all of this. I looked at supermedia store wanting to purchase some ty's but they have different codes as well. thanks...

to make this short and simple, as this question has been asked over a million times.....

look here tomorrow (sunday) and some members will post what media is being sold, where to buy, and how much (it's the sales ads for the week)....
the list you looked up means who manufactured them.
want advice... just stay away from CMC MAG media... aka memorex
buy trusted media, such as verbatim, ty, fuji, maxell, sony, ritekG03 or better...
most of these have the label that says 'made in japan) thats when you know you have the good stuff, the only exception being verbatim, made in taiwan.

hi and welcome to AfterDawn...

the purpose of the "media ID codes" are to determine the actual MANUFACTURER of the discs...

the quality between manufacturers vary GREATLY, so, when you purchase particular blank media, you simply run them through a dvd identifier program to give you the ACTUAL manufacturers of said media...

this can help you determine FOR YOURSELF how "good quality" they really are...

for example, media id codes starting with "MCC", manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., are in my opinion, VERY GOOD quality media...this can be found in a few "brands" of dvds, mainly under the Verbatim brand though...

Taiyo Yuden is another manufacturer, their codes start with "TY" in the DVD-R format, and "YUDEN" in the DVD+R format, but with Taiyo Yuden, you have to be careful of FAKES...there are some shady companies/brands out there that "borrow" the Taiyo Yuden media coding to put on their own media...

ALL Genuine Taiyo Yuden media are "made in japan", anywhere else, you got some fakes.

hope that is a good start for ya...keep reading...keep learning...happy holidays.

Media codes and or manufacture ID is a very important key to verify that you're getting the media from the right manufacture. I don't really have much concern when it comes to Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004), since now all of their media is "Made In Taiwan", except their DVD+R DL is "Made In Singapore".

However, if it's YUDEN and Maxell, then of course I'll have to make sure it says; "Made In Japan" is a must have. I'm a DVD+R person, meaning I prefer any DVD+R over DVD-R. So all my media code(s) is pretty easy to remember.
