Could be a fliptop issue with the white magnet, could be a laser issue, could be something else. Personally, I sometimes have troubles loading the Swap Magic DVD (everything else loads fine) only if I've been running the PS2 for a while (like an hour or more), but I've got a slimline myself. Off a cold boot, the DVD always works fine for me, but it sounds like something else entirely for you.
Like I posted in another thread, you *can* try using the Swap Magic CD to load DVD games using the cogswaploader CD by following the instructions here ( http://www.swapmagicfix.com/cogswaploader.html ). Instead of using the Swap Magic DVD in step 3, you can also use any original large-sized, high-TOC DVD5 game like Devil May Cry, Mercenaries, etc. This doesn't work for slimlines, but it should with the v4.

Is your disc dirty or scratched?

Try mixing 50% water & 50% alcohol together. Use a SOFT CLOTH, not a napkin or anything _ABRASIVE_, and wipe it from the center of the DVD to the outer rim. Do that one streak at a time. You can probably do that in 4-5 wipes. Let it dry off. If it still can't read the SM DVD, it is probably damaged.

i am kind of terrified to do that because there is a high chance of it getting broken right?
is there any other way or do i have to use a soft cloth?

im sure www.swapmagic3.com could replace your disc for free. They do that for upgrades. I have used liquid dishwasher soap to fix my disc read errors but haven't had one of those in 2 years now.

Basically you can use that, a Game Doctor, or just buff out the scratches manually.
