DVD+R says 16x but it only burns at 4x or 2x, what gives?

I went to Office Depot and the DVD Guru there told me that they have DVD's that burn at 16x...so I went ahead and bought them...few for 10 bucks...now...on the cover , they are Office Depot brand, says 16x but does not specify whether its read at 16x or writes at 16x...he said it writes at 16x...
Whenever I use any of the burning programs including Nero it taps out to 4x writing speed...
Can somebody break this down "Barney Style" for me? what is the 16x for? is the DVD Guru from Office Depot lost? and are there any DVD's that can burn at higher speeds or do I need to fix a setting on Nero..

I'll give you a word of advice and it's for your own good. Don't burn at 16x even if you're able too. That is way too fast! If you burn that fast, your backups will look terrible and will more than likely start to skip abd pixelate. Try to keep your burn speed down to 4x.
If the package said 16x on it, then it should be capable of writing at 16x. I'm not sure why you're burner won't go higher than 4x. I'll let someone else take that one.

ONE WORD...FIRMWARE~
what drive model/brand do you have? for 16x rated media to work properly OR to achieve a higher speed of burn, your firmware needs to be up to date to recognize this newer media...
give me some more info on the burner you are using...and i can help you further...

I don't know where that other drive came from...I only have one so called CD/DVD drive...and its the NEC one...but the comp shows two? other issue though...

This from your friendly NEC web site to describe what your burner does ! In layman terms, your burner starts burning slow... checks how many errors it gets and stays at a speed that will give you a decent burn ! All NEC have this feature and it is an excellent one at that !
Your media may say it can accept 16X writing -- that does not mean the hardware doing the writing has to go at that speed -- specially when you are handling delicate data transfers such as video/audio files.

hey Jeanc1. I think i need a firmware as well but I don't know which one to get. Here is some information on my burner.

Dont know what you have -- so I cant say if it's the latest !
AND as always --- Flashing these firmwares requires some risk on your part. If you are not comfortable with this please do not proceed. They cannot guarantee they will work or flash correctly in any environment out of their control.-- disclaimer from TDB

Use Nero Info Tool and look at your Drive like this :-

if u have dvddecrypter it will show u. go under tools and select drive then check for firmware updates

Is it worth updating it? How much faster will it work? Its kind of risky and I don't want to ruin my burner.
My current firmware is 202C (thanks gamename)
My friend told me that I can just go to dell.com (I have a dell) and update my burner through the site?
What are the advantages of updating your firmware?

Firmware updates from the manufacturer are usually to correct problems that have come up thru the support dept. --- If you are not having probs, why try to fix something that ai'nt broke !
Some firmware update ((from TDB) are to permit changing the Region -- increase the writing speed -- They are at your own risks.
