Im getting this on a some of my dvd's. Is there a way to fix them without the toothpaste method?

If cleaning the disc does not work, then your disc is damaged somehow and you will not be able to rip it. If possible, get a replacement.

this usually happens when your reader has a problem communicating with the disc, if you are reading with a DVD-ROM drive try using a DVD-R/RW drive this should help...

Sometimes you can rip hard to rip discs with DVDFab Decrypter (Free).
If not you may have to get a different press. It happened to me with National Treasure. Bad Press. I had to exchange it.
