I just purchased a LiteOn 1101 DVD recorder. Very cheap. I have two intentions - 1) burn VHS-C tapes to DVD and 2) replace VCR recording.

I've played around with it and recorded shows from TV and VHS-C (playing in VCR) without any problems to +R and +RW. The problem is that they won't play in the other 2 DVD players I have. One is a portable player that I've confirmed supports +R/RW, because it plays DVDs fine that are burned by a friend of mine from his PC. This weekend, I even bought new Sony +RW DVDs, which are exactly the same type he uses. It won't recognize my DVD. His works fine.

They do play fine in my laptop.

So, recorded shows (replacing the VCR) doesn't work now because once I've recorded from TV, I can't play them any where else in the house. And, I'm a little afraid to copy all my VHS-C tapes to DVD because I don't know what they'll play on in the future.

I have a friend at work who's having the same problems with a DVD recorder he bought the say day (different vendor DVD). I've given my DVDs to somebody else who tried to play them on a DVD player 6 months old and one about 2 years old. They will not play in either player. My DVD players are about 5 years old (portable) and 2 years old.

Any help?

so this is a dvd player that records tv to dvds right ?
if so your problem mite be that you have not finalized your dvd to play on most dvd players check in your dvd burner book to see how to do so it should be in options then finalize....
if this it not what your talking about then forget all that i said...

What is media did you record on? Like it was said previously by axemurder, it needs to be finalized. If it's a DVD+RW then you won't be able to finalize.

It only supports +R/+RW. The manual says I don't have to finalize a +RW and that's what fails.

The +R also fails, but I did not finalize it. I plan to do that tonight.

The +RW should work.

I belive that it is saying that u dont have to finalize rw to play as long as the dvd players you are playing it on support rw playback..
If you take a DVD+R record on it fanalize it .it will work on pretty much any player...just my thoughts

Ok. Here's an update. I messed up a little in my original description of the problem.

The Sony DVDs I have are +R. Those are also what my friend has. Last night, I finalized one of these and it works fine in both my older DVDs. That's very good news. It means I can archive my VHS-C tapes with confidence they'll work in other DVD players.

But, I still can't get a +RW to work. That means realistically I can't use this DVD-recorder as a VCR replacement, because I'm certainly not going to record with +R and then throw away (because we may want to watch the recorded show on another DVD player in the house).

@axemurder

The way I read it is that he wants to reuse the discs over and over again and he can't do that with the +R that play on his stand alones.

The RW's that are reuseable will not play on his players.

I use -RWs in my pioneer recorder and they play fine in all of my players around the house. However I do finalize them first. Dont know why your manual would say you dont have to finalize because mine says you must to play in other players.

9mmruger1 has it right. If I'm going to use this to replace my VCR, I'd much rather record on a +RW, view it on any player, and then add to it or write over it when I'm done (much like I do a VCR tape). The thought of having to throw away +Rs every time I record something is not pleasing (plus I don't want to go through the hassle of having to finalize the DVD just to watch a 30-minute sitcom).

BTW - I reread the manual. It does say that I need to finalize +R. I don't need to finalize +RW.

Finalizing ?fixes? the recordings in place so that the disc can be played on a regular DVD player or computer equipped with a suitable DVD-ROM drive.
You can undo the finalization on DVD-RW discs recorded on a recorder in Video-mode. You need to do this if you want to record more material or edit material already on the disc.
