I am BRAND new... just bought the Sony standalone DVD recorder... came with Nero software which is installed now. I don't have internet access at home, so that's a downfall for downloading any other programs, or upgrades, etc. What I need help with is knowing what I do first and if the programs I have will do all I need.
I originally tried DVD43. I put the dvd in and checked off the two options under the smiley face, but it still said the dvd is copyright protected (Mr & Mrs Smith DVD) so will I be able to copy DVD's by using the following:

AnyDVD to copy the DVD onto my harddrive?
Then Nero to burn it onto a DVD?
Is that sufficient?

Sorry for the ignorance but I'm just now trying to get started on all this technology and am clueless (not computer savvy AT ALL!)
Thanks for any help you can give me!?

First of all if you want to do a Backup of a DVD you need DVD Decrypter (although is not available anymore) maybe someone will help you find a replacement of it, you also need DVD Shrink (if you want your dvd to fit into a standard DVD-R (4.7gb), you also need Nero (which you already own), so first you need to rip your dvd with DVD Shrink into your hd, after that you get into Nero and choose burn dvd video files, you choose the files into the video_ts folder, press burn, and happy burnin'!!! :)

Hi, welcome to the forum. AnyDVD is not a copy program, it is only an encryption breaker that runs in the background similar to DVD43. DVD43 has been updated to handle newer encryptions so you may want to make sure that you have the latest version.

I would suggest that you begin by reading the guides in my signature block and then determin a process that you want to use. I highly recommend downloading DVDdecrypter which is a ripping and burning program and DVDShrink which is a reauthor/compression program/ripping program.

If you do not have the internet then my suggestion would be to obtain a jump drive (usb) and visit the library and download the programs that you need.

You can get DVDdecrypter here: http://mrbass.org/dvdrip/
and DVDshrink here: http://mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

Used in conjunction with DVD43 or AnyDVD you will be good to go.

Thie guides are important though. Read and gain an understanding of what it is that you are trying to do.

Post back if you have questions.

Thank you for your response...

Do you know if "AnyDVD" does what DVD Decrypter does?
and what is DVD Fab Decrypter? the same?

Doesn't the Nero package have something to shrink them so they will fit onto 1 disk... I thought I saw something like that. The software didn't come with a manual so I wouldn't swear to it though...

Thank you 9mmruger1

I just got one for Xmas, so I'll do what you suggested... may take me a while since I don't understand a lot of it, and with the holidays coming, I won't have the free time. But I'll let you know how I do!

Thank you both!

Hi again, AnyDVD does not do what DVDdecrypter does. AnyDVD only runs in the background and breaks the encryption. DVDdecrypter actually will rip the files to your hard drive and burn them.

DVDFab decrypter has a built in encryption breaker and is a ripper, but does not burn the files to the disc. Only a ripper. Here is a guide for using DVDFab w/DVDdecrypter and DVDShrink.

I first want to thank you for the step by step guides... they were SOOOOO helpful! It was incredible! I did get the DVD backed up to my HD and managed to get to the point of burning them on a DVD. It looked like it was burning it to the DVD because I even got the message at the bottom showing the % of how far along it was in burning it. But, I'm not sure (showing my ignorance again) if it did. After it was all said and done, I tried "playing video" thru Nero, and it said "Sorry, the folder you have selected (which was my new Sony standalone DVD recorder w/ the dvd in it) does not contain a valid DVD-Video, SVCD or VCD Structure (I burned onto a DVD-RW)
Another question, not sure if to post here or if you can help. You all seem soooo knowledgeable! I have my VCR hooked up to my standalone DVD recorder to be able to "capture video" to my HD. But I don't know how to use the programs I have downloaded now to be able to get around the copyright to copy the VHS movies onto DVD's???

Thanks in advance!

Hi, did you try playing the disc on a standalone player?

Meaning a regular DVD player that's hooked up to my TV? I don't think the old VD player I have can play DVD-RW's... because it's an -RW, do I have to "finalize" it? Or should that be taken care of when it's burned on to the DVD by Nero?

I've never used an RW disc, but I would not think that you would have to finalize it as it's recordable. I always use DVD+R so that I can booktype them to DVD-ROM. Then they play in everything.

Someone will be along who knows about the RW thing. I would just recommend you continue to look around the forum and read the threads, there is so much information available that we can learn from.

Merry Christmas.

Thank you. I hope someone else perhaps can answer.

What does it mean to "booktype to DVD-Rom?" and how do you do that?

Thank you for the links.
However, I tried this last night and didn't get far... I am using
DVD-RW, will it not bookset with -RW, only +RW's? Am I reading the information correctly? I tried following the instructions to change this on Nero, and at the beginning it says to go in to "OPTIONS" but I don't have anywhere that says "OPTIONS" so I was lost...
I guess I will try doing it in DVD Decrypter...
