I softmodded my xbox and then renamed the file xboxdash.xbe to msdash.xbe because i thought that would launch the ms dash but when i restarted i got a error 13 i think but i could still play games and then the xbox got unplugged for a long time and when i restarted i got a error 16 and it cant play games. Is there any way to save my xbox. Apart from like getting a modchip or something.

1. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. 2. If it still runs media (dvds) then you can put slayers on a disc and put it in your xbox and do shit so it can be un-borked.

You basically need either a program that will let you get an FTP server running on the xbox and then just re-rename it remotely, or a file manager (there are plenty of them around, and should almost all be bootable from a disc with no dash installed) and just correct it yourself. It could be a good opportunity to just upgrade your hard drive with Slayers too if you wanted some of the extra things that having a larger drive allows.

Sorry, I didn't see that you can't boot games any more... You need to be able to boot discs to do much of what I suggested. Those error codes relate to dashboard errors, so nothing more is broken with any luck. http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/explanation_of_error_codes.htm might help a little with a description. Keep trying to see if anything will boot from the disc, you REALLY need that.

I've read SOMETHING once about hotswapping the drive... It isn't something I would recommend though... There is something about pulling cables into and out of powered on computers that doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I'm sympathetic that you're in you're present situation, but if you royally *%#@ your system trying to do a dodgy fix I'm afraid I'm going to have to join imgr81337 and just sit back and laugh at you. Look around on www.xboxscene.com for a whole bunch of tutorials, but don't blame me if it goes horribly wrong: I won't be able to hear you over the laughter and 'I told you so's.

Work on getting the console to boot something from a disc. ANYTHING. Seriously, just try to get a file manager from xbins, change the .xbe to default.xbe, make an xiso of the folder, and burn it onto a CD-RW. You have nothing to lose using a rewritable (and besides, CD-R won't read).

Just looking through a few archives I have, the boXplorer archive I pulled from xbins (boxplorer096beta.zip) even contains an already prepared xiso. Try to work out how to get it for yourself (login to an efnet irc server, join #xbins, "/msg xbins !list", follow instructions to log into ftp://distribution.xbins.org, should be under a sub-subfolder under XBOX), but if you are really desperate PM me in a day or so with your email address and I might be able to throw it your way.

Sent. Burn it onto a CD-RW or DVD+-R, stick it in, and it probably should boot, being homebrew it shouldn't rely on the presence of any dashboard. I can't stress strongly enough how useful it is to learn how to get these files yourself though...

do u know how to fix my problem by hotswapping and one question can i ftp in a error 16 cause i know its broken because i changed xboxdash.xbe to msdash.xbe because on my unleashx dasboard when i tried to launch the microsoft dashboard it said cant find msdash.xbe the i got error 13 the my mom plugged it out to plug in the christmas tree and it was there for like a day then my other bro wanted to play gta san andreas and we found out it was broken then cause it wont play games. i dont have a modchip and dont plan on getting one if there was a way to ftp or hotswap (preferably hotswapp cause ftp has never worked for me) to edit that file that would be cool cause then i could backup the eeprom.bin and then use that to unlock whenever i got an error

No, you won't be able to FTP, the xbox hasn't completed booting up. BUT, the drive is unlocked in order for it to have read that a file is missing, so I suppose hotswapping it over is a possibility if you are determined to go down that road.

You'll need a set of torx screwdriver bits too, in case you don't already have them.

if u have an exbox with error code 16 after softmod but mistakenly erased or corrupted on ur hard drive go to http://xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html . its a hot swap tutorial if u still have original hard drive. and to everyone else, if u dont have anything to say but stupid crap like ha ha ha or paper weight then shut the ^@%# up, u dig!

You need to put the xboxdash.xbe or m$dash.xbe file on a re-writable cd. burn it with Nero at slow Speed 4x if possible. use a cd-rw disk to do this.
Add a dummy file to your compilation between 75-100 meg.
If you have a thomson drive this can be a problem, thier very tempramental. philips or samsung your probably ok.
If your drive won,t recognise or boot this, try the same process as making a bios boot-disk. iso image.
Hope this helps buddy, i know it,s frustrating but keep at it. trial and error, will produce a result.

Ok,
After browsing the net, i,ve discovered that error 16 occurs after error 13. which is basically the fact that the system will not boot-up due to clock settings.
The dashboard attempted to boot but did not find the system clock.
Slayers will not solve this problem.
Since i,ve starting replying to threads here, i get messages stating that. your I.P Address is ..........and your location is........
So i,m doing no more answers to problems.
Sorry but someone is watching this site, who does,nt like me, giving advice towards helping people.
Perhaps it,s the fact that they might be losing money, on fixing your console. P.M Me for further information regarding this thread.

i joined this place just to let everyone know that the xbox tutorials 161 pasted above works to fix error 13/16
i could not get vga option to work but i used the text based option and it works fine, just follow the instructions exact
if you cannot find original xbox dash files then you need to get slayers new install/boot disk, you will find the /C/ directory of original xbox u need located in the /ALL/ directory of his disc, extract all the stuff in there to your linux\c folder (audio,xodash,xboxdash.xbe.. etc.etc..)
ps. get xboxhdm 1.9 from xbins, its in the /xbox/linux/distro section, much easier than the annoying site they tell you
