Can't Make Copies of Backups ?

Hi,
I tried to backup a backup dvd that I just watched and it played fine. I tried 1 Click Dvd Copy, CloneDvd2, Dvd Decrypter, and nothing worked.
So, I got out the original which had ALOT of scratches on it, cleaned the disk but the scratches were still very visible, and it copied fine.
The back up I was trying to copy was on Fuji media (Prodisc media Id) and unfortunately had a Full Face stick on label on it which looked to me to be centered properly.
So, my question is why did my scratched Dvd Copy, and not the backup that had no scratches, prints, dust, dirt, or anything on it ??

its one of those freak of nature things, also possibly your data on the disk is corrupted or something...
download isobuster and use that if you need to (this should probably work)

Answer:
Fuji media (Prodisc media Id)
The quality control of the manufacturer for prodisc are on the lower end of the spectrum. It may have been burned too fast on that prodisc media.
You've tried several different programs with the same result: Too many read errors. Try some quality japanese media like taiyo yuden/verbatim/ Japanese sony-fuji-or maxell. Also keep the burn speed at 4x max.
To be able to successfully re-rip a backup,that first backup copy needs have as little errors as possible.
Of course,this may be the reason:

Try peeling that sticker off.Paper/sticker labels can cause a disc to be unbalanced and also build up heat.Goo gone is said to be a pretty good label remover.
Another possibility I have found after using 5 different DVD-RW drives: The quality of those drives can affect the errors on those backup discs. Low quality drives backups will have a harder time re-ripping.I have an HP 640c lightscribe that I can't re-rip its backups despite a 4x burn on taiyo yuden.That drive is sitting in a box for now.
What is your DVD-RW drive brand name and model#?
Did you burn that prodisc with the label on it?
How fast were those backups burned-on the prodisc and your blanks?

Yep, I know what you mean. AnyDVD and Clonedvd2 for me for over a year, and I am starting to have problems like that AGAIN. I have been using Ridata G04 but now G05 (since Go4 was discontinued) Ridata was a brand of disks often referred to in these forums, but now is seldom mentioned. Instead, folks here refer to the more expensive discs for backup.
At any rate, my last three backups of three different purchased, can not be read in my computer once burned. I have no problems playing them in my trusty 40.00 cyberhome player, but since my computer will not even recognize the discs, of course one can not make a copy of the backup (which is really not a problem, since how many backups of your movies should you need at any one time), HOWEVER, I can not play them on my computer either.
I realize the last three discs is probably bad to some extent, I realize I should stop burning to the edge (something I may start doing to see if it makes any difference at all) however, as long as I can play them, that is "some" consolation.

diverj: Maybe the dvd-rom is wearing out in your pc.
Those $25-$40 el cheapo players will play anything you slap in them.
What's the brand name and model# of that DVD-RW drive?
Did you try the plus format and see if that DVD-RW drive will recognize those backups?

Not necessarily. With the local on sale media at stores like Office Depot,Staples,and Best Buy.
I can get the Office Depot's 8x brand media for 20 cents each and they are ritek media.G05 on the dash and R-03 on their plus.
I got my last batch of fuji ty's for 30 cents each at staples.Also picked up some sony tys for 32 cents each,not counting the governor's share.
This week, Verbatim 16x,mitsubishi media at best buy for $15 a spindle of 50. That's my max price on regular plus format media.Printables/lightscribe/and Dl media is another story.

You know I'm having trouble with this as well. My computer won't even recognize a backup. I can't even open it to see the contents. I'm using Memorex and Sony media to burn. They perform well on the home dvd player but I can't get them to work to make another backup. The burner I'm using is a pioneer. I've used all of the different software to try and read it. I use DVD Shrink to make the first backup.

What do you use to burn with after compressing it with DVD Shrink?
Nero/Copytodvd/or DVD Decrypter?
I play my backups on quite a few different stand alone players,ps2s,and pc drives. I get better playback results with my oem nero6.Dvd decrypter's burn engine does give me trouble.
I only have trouble re-ripping my HP 640c backups-too many errors.I only use that drive to read/rip/ and the lightscribe feature. Benq's along with DVD Shrink and Nero do majority of my backups.On the fly copies are no problem either.
What firmware version you have on your pioneer burner?
Sometimes updating that firmware may be needed to help the write strategy.

well, my DVD burner is a multi format burner from Iomega and cost 118.00. Its only about 1 year old now, perhaps 18 at the MOST, and my DVD ROM player came with my computer 5 years ago. I think the player is a pioneer, but hard to say, as whatever it is, is a rebaged to Gateway specs. Who knows what the problem is. If it plays, I do not know if I want to spend multi dollars trying this and that to figure out what the problem really is. Plays in the stand alone, and even if it is a cheapo and plays anything, it does play.
It is annoying that backups can not be copied again, mostly because I am a control nut and I know something is wrong with the disk. I hate to know things I have has problems and potentially can not live up to its entire potential whether I utilize that potential or not.

What speed is it?
Go to device manager under cd/dvd-rom drives and look for actual model# and firmware version.Click on that drive,and hit details tab to give you the info.
I've got 2 I/O magic 16x's-internal . The first one is 13 months old and it's a benq 1620 bought for $40. The second,bought 10 months ago because the first drive was superb and my spare pc had a compatability issue with my apex player. That second I/O magic 16x turned out to be made by EMPA of middle east FIZO-$40,and at the same staples store! Boy was that drive a pc of junk.Those empa backups had a heck of a time playing,ditched it for a genuine benq 1620 from newegg for $50.
BTC also makes drives for the I/O Magic 16x.Hard telling how many more manufacturers supplied those drive to Iomega.
That firmware should help narrow down who actually built it.
Those el-cheapo players play anything you throw at them.Even if they have errors on them. Now when you try to re-rip them,those errors will be noticed by a pc dvd-rom drive. It should still recognize them.Since that pc don't recognize them,you can't even run an error scan to see how they are, Bummer.

I use Nero to burn after shrink does it's thing. I have the most up to date firmware 1.08. I just can't figure it out....

Yep, I am correct. Burner reports in device manager that the Iomega is an Iomega. My gateway Rom DVD reader is a Pioneer (though it came in my Gateway computer).

if you want to make a back up of your back up the easist way that i do it is i use ashampoo and Nero and blind write, anyone of theese programs will make a good back up of your back up

I experienced this same problem using Nero and sonic's copy disc function. I am doing away with my backups with labels on them and converting them to printable dvds. I attributed the problem to the labels because when I copied one without a label, it copied fine.

Yep, those labels can screw you up. A co-worker gave me a dvd she want's copies of with the Division 5 and 6 state football championship games for Ohio in 2004. This disc has a sticker label,plus it's on Sony +1x-4x ricohjpn-R01 media. DVD Shrink gave me a crc error,and DVD Decrypter can't rip it. I'll have to ask her if I can peel that sticker off.

ive relized that using apps like DVD Shrink have gave me problems from the beging. o btw just found out that if the original dvd disc was produced by sony corp they put somthing in there media that makes it harder to copy use DVD Decrypter recommended app using shrinking appz just creates more problems and money loss well for me it did i am using Verbatim DVD+R / +R DL and using DVD Decrypter to rip and IMGburn 110 to burn hope this helps

I've had similar problems in the past trying to copy copies. I learned the hard way NOT to put adhesive labels on DVD's. Just use a Sharpie. I had some DVD's that I couldn't copy with DVD Decrypter, or CloneDVD 2. What I finally tried was "DVDFab Decrypter". It worked on every disk. Sometimes it took a LONG time to rip but it works. After ripping, I burned them with CloneDVD 2.

corbus did you just fall out of bed and hit your head on a rock or some hard object this post(o btw just found out that if the original dvd disc was produced by sony corp they put somthing in there media that makes it harder to copy ) where did you come up with this? and this (recommended app using shrinking appz just creates more problems and money loss well for me it did ) so are you saying that you think that sony puts somting on the blank disks so it will make it harder to make backups of the dvd's that people own ? are you for real?

I believe what CoreBus is talking about is the protection that Sony puts on some of there dvd movies can cause problems backing them up.
I use AnyDVD and have never had any problems.

hi,
it's definalty the label. I have stoped labeling my discs awhi8le ago. Try removing the label with luke warm water and then try to backup. becareful not to put to much ressure on teh disc when doit so.

Just another point, this thread seems to have touched on several different things but I've found that when backing up from a backup that my dvd rom would not read DVD+R and I had to update firmware so someone else may run into that too. Also, and I was never able to verify but one of the senior members suggested to me that if a backup is burned too close to the edge (or maximum capacity) that the disk may not be able to be read properly, so now I've set my output at right about 4.3 Gb max wheras I was burning upto...I think 4.6 or so. I'm not saying that this is the answer but maybe it will help someone.

I'm having problems geting backups to burn;
I've tried Alcohol 120, and DVDFab, in addition to Shrink/1click copy.
The Label is intact, and in perfect shape; No visible prints on disc; Plays perfectly in DVD-Rom/DVD Player; Media might be HP (6 months old); Originally created with DVD-Shrink(4x speed)
Any suggestions? (Other then to stop using HP media, because I did)
