Hi,

Can someone tell me if we make a DVD-9 movie to fit into DVD-5 disc will there be any loss of image quality? The DVD Shrink says Image quality as 50%. So does that mean the DVD-5 disc when viewed over normal TV will have bad quality. Or is there anyway I can make sure that the image quality will not be affected by DVD-9 to DVD-5 Disc.

Thanks

I have a 65 inch screen TV and see no flaw in a 50% compressed dvd. Some may say that there's pixal problems, but none here. You could also just record the main movie since nobody really watch the previews or extras or even the credits.

I've tried to see if it's the same quality by watching the originals then pop in the copy and then back to the originals. Did not notice a thing...except the design of the DVD.

Thanks a lot KCflyGuy. The reason why I asked is I was confused when it said 50% and then the idea of DVD is defeated with inferior video quality. Thanks for your response and I infer that even with 50% compression the movie should look good.

I believe that a movie that has been compressed 50% and then another 75% still have a better quality than any non-commercial VHS. I would say that it's a lot better any VHS, but now, there's some technology that makes those commercial VHS as clear and crisp as DVDs. I know I may be wrong, but that's what I do notice.

I do all my backups of DVD9 on to DVD5's without any perceptable loss of quality that these old eyes (54) can tell.

No worries....you can do it!

There is only loss of "quality" in movies that are filled with lots of fast motion.

Mpeg-2 is a lossy compression, so you will lose quality, but it will not be enough to make it look worse. I like to blank everything out except the main movie and then compress if I have to. You also have to keep in mind that movies by a lot of big names like Sony are compressed like crazy even on the original. This means if you try to fit say a 2 hour movie on a DVD5, it will still be better quality than an original Sony movie since for Sony, 2 hours is less than 3 GB because of the low bitrate.

This is why compressing movies, even around 50% is not that bad. It is not relative. 70% compression on something like Kingdom of Heaven is not the same as 70% compression on Stealth. This is because Stealth uses a much lower bitrate, but ofcourse, Stealth fits fine on a DVD5 with no compression.

I also can't tell the difference between backups and originals. Just make sure you use good blank media. If you search the forums, you will find all you want concerning different medias.

Thanks KCflyGuy, 9mmruger1, JaguarGod, mrpat67 for your responses and time. Highly appreciate it and it was also informative.

Yeah even I will be backing up only the main movie. Is CloneDVD better or DVD Shrink better while backing up DVD-9 to DVD-5 or all these does the same way and will not be much of a difference?

mrpat67,

Can you tellme which blank media is good? Any specific brand? THe blank media's I've seen so far are blue in color on the surface. Is that good or we need to buy the silver or gold surface disk.

I again thank everyone who responded.

Happy holiday and new year.

Thanks

I don't care what you say, when you have 50% compression you WILL see pixillation on many movies.

Try and backup Finding Nemo and I think it is 67% and it clearly has pixillation.

I try and keep the compression to a minimum whenever I can. Easiest way is to just backup the movie only (using the reauthor mode) and cutting off the credits after the first few seconds (who reads the credits anyway?)

In general, movies with fast action such as car chase scenes and fight scenes and stuff like that, will have pixillation with big compression.

Lots of people have said that CloneDVD2 is better than DVD Shrink, but the one time I tried it even at 74% compression (quality) it looked like crap. I will eventually give it another shot, but not for a while. You can try it out for 21 days if you like.

Since DVD Shrink is free, I would just go with that, because any difference will not be noticed. Also DVD Shrink handles high compression better.

@snorkel,

I am not sure about Finding Nemo, but for every movie I have tried to compress, I have noticed little to no difference and I have seen them on a 65" screen HDTV and a 60" screen (The new SXRD from Sony).

Like I said, not every movie is equal. 67% on Finding Nemo may be bad because the movie is already compressed like hell in the original. I just backed up a movie that was 1 Hour 59 Minutes long and the movie was 6.5GB with 2.0 Audio pre-compression. This suggests a bitrate of about 7000 kbps. After compression the bitrate drops to about 4800 kbps.

Now look at stealth again. This movie was 2 hours long with a size 3.68GB with Dolby 5.1 audio. This suggests that video bitrate was about 3800 kbps. This means that if Stealth is compressed, it will look pretty bad since the bitrate is already so low and the movie that I compressed earlier has a higher bitrate even after compressed.

Also aspect ratio plays a role in visual quality. Widescreen movies tend to look better compressed than 4:3 movies. This is especially true on widescreen TVs since a 4:3 will be stretched more than a widescreen movie.

You are correct about compression making a movie lose quality, but whether or not it is noticed depends on more than the compression ratio. Also, like you, I ditch all the special features (but leave the menus) and sometimes cut the credits (I use VobBlanker if they are in their own cell). So far, I have had very few movies go below 75% in the past few months. Just movies that are very long.

I backed up four brothers and the compression was about 57% and didn't notice anything at all. I fast forward it to the car chase scene and picture looks normal. I haven't had any problems backing up any movie and im new to backing up dvds.
