I was helping my brother in law set up his new computer... he really wants to burn DVD's... which I have never had any experience doing before. I had him set up w/ dvdshrink and nero and we tried to burn "kicking and screaming" 3 times, each time getting the same error log.

It looks to me like the errors start at 8:13:35 PM #22

any suggestions would be very helpful, thanks.

Your Nero is out of date, I think current Nero 7 is 7.0.1.4 now. Your firmware is also out of date (i think). Go here and check, I'm not too sure about your drive:

You are writing too close to the edge, In Shrink go to Edit>Preferences>under first tab>scroll down until you get to custom>type in box 4300.

YOu are burning WAY too fast. Try not to burn faster than 4x, experiment with 8x if you want.

You need to free up some memory when you burn. You should not be doing anything else.

Doesn't seem to like your media.
I could not find your DVD-RW burner so I am not sure if it needs a firmware upgrade - my guess is yes, but I can't be sure.

Again, this is just too fast to burn.

That's what I see in this log.

What brand of computer is it? You need to locate firmware for that drive I would guess so that it can handle the media you are using.

Cheers.

About the computer/drive...

He just got a brand new HP, I'm sorry I'm not using that computer now so I can't give you many details. It had lightscribe if that helps(?)

Seeing as two of you replied at almost the same time with the same suggestions I think I'll definately turn down the speed and write further from the edge (if I can figure THOSE out).

I will be at his house on/around christmas when we hoped to figure his problems out.

BTW, thank you both for the quick response

But you didn't answer my question. Is it external? You said you bought it so that makes me think you no. Your atapi drivers aren't loaded correctly. Light scribe means nothing, just that it can write pictures on the from of the disc.

Yes, here is the link ,remember to just download packets 1 and 2.

YOu can change this in Shrink, assuming you are having Nero burn automatically after Shrink. In the very last window that you get in Shrink before it launches into it's analyze\Encoding phase click on the very last tab, the "burn settings" tab. And you change it there

YOu can change the atapi thing here:

I went to burn 4 DVD's yesterday, the first 2 burned fine on Memorex 16X with CMC Media, that ended a spindle. I then opened the next spindle of Memorex 16X, this one was Ritek media and I got a burn faileure, tried again, burn failure. Could it be the disk? I have backed up over 800 DVD's with the DVDShrink/Nero combo posted and I figure why mess with a good thing. Its in the middle of encoding and I will be updating Nero after this try. I also turned down max burn speed to 8X. I have an AMD running at 3600+ speeds and a Gig of Corsair XMS Xtreme, 240 Gbs of Hard Drive space. Also, I have never had a problem burning this close to the edge, I turned it down to 4300 for the attempt that is running now. Here's one of the error reports.

I'll do all that's suggested, as thats why I'm here. But let me ponder this, why now, why all of a sudden? I've burned countless Memorex Disks with no problems, not a single one. Almost 90% of previous disks were CMC which are not highly regarded. Now I pop this Ritek in and it doesn't like it. By having the secondaries in PIO mode that will drag my primaries(CD, DVD-ROM) down to PIO also correct?

Media codes change and the burners much change to accept the new media codes. That's why the burner mfgs produce firmware updates so that the burners will recognize the media.

Yes, PIO is bad. DMA is good!

I have nothing installed on the secondary channels, it says DMA if available. and then for the Current Transfer Mode it says "Not Applicable"

All available drives are set to DMA and have been. I've had to do the DMA fix in the past on the primary drives and it is painfully obvious when its in PIO mode.

Here's the latest from while I was at work, I just update the Silicon Image SATA Deiver so we'll see if the helps. I have nothing on the secondary IDE channel so if anyone knows whats up with that let me know. I just don't understand why all my crappy CMC disk burned fine but it doesn't like the Ritek...stupid thing.....only Maxwell or TY for me for now on. I'll post the new results after my log s checked and i try again tonight. See ya in the morning. Thanks

I have to say use better media, I've heard pretty much nothing but bad about Ritek latly. I say just get better media, you know TY verbatim. And also try burning at 4x.

Yeah, gotta agree on the media thing. My CMC's burned fine although I am scared for the future. The Riteks are a LITTLE step up, both are MEmorex 16X DVD-R. I only burn at 4x, also.

I have been following this thread and I'll throw my 2 cents in. According to NEC Website the Ritek (+) are not on the approved list so there is not MID Code for them. This is why I think you are getting the below error codes. Granted some of the others might be Ritek but the MID Codes are different. Until NEC updates the MID code you probably will have problems

After doing some search on dvdrhelp.com I've found very mixed reviews of using ritek with the 2500. I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Any other opinions?

nikolasmo,
I've read through this thread also, let me add my 2c too.
I have two NEC burners myself, those Ritek disks are pure crap. I can burn them just fine with very good results actually but, in my case, down the road they deteriorate very badly. I still have some left over from a few years ago that were supposed to be ok, they are not. I even, out of curiousity, tested of how soon they turn bad, let me tell you, not even a month. So my advice is, even if you will be able to burn them right as of now, you'll have problems later. Avoid them and go get some better media.

@dr_no

Don't say that, Ritek use to be really good media. One of the best actually. They could compete with TY or Verbs, it's just lately that they've started to fail.
