Has anyone tried it? I ordered some 8x discs without thinking. (TY) There

is a label in the cake box that says they can't be used in a 4x burner.

Sony doesn't have an update for my burner.

8x rated discs only indicate their "maximum speed" for keeping/maintaining the quality of the burns...many drives out there can actually "overburn" (burn faster than the rated speed of the discs), this is NOT something i would recommend you do...do NOT overburn discs...your resulting backup will be crap...

if you got Taiyo Yudens, i PERSONALLY feel it's quite safe to burn them @8x, that's just how I DO IT, but, 4x is also a VERY SAFE bet to burn TYs at...and if your burner will only burn @4x maximum..than on 8x rated TYs...BURN THEM AT 4x, NOT SLOWER...i have quite a few Sony burners myself and can SAFELY tell you that if you BURN LOWER than 4x, especially on 8x rated TAIYO YUDENS, you will get a much WORSE quality scan/resulting disc than if you burned it @4x...

people always say "slower is better," which i agree with to some extent...but NOT if they recommend you burn SLOWER than 4x on 8x rated discs..seriously, that is totally not necessary and is actually detrimental to your resulting backup...

Agree with kivory, you will be ok burning them at 4x.
Those disks are excellent, I even overburned the R+ on my NEC drive at 16x with better then expected results. Was able to pull a 100 disc quality score on it. :)

On all the sony 8x media I have used, they all said 1x-8x speed. The only trouble you may have is,very slim,a firmware update may be in order-since you have an older 4x drive. It'll give you an illegal disc error if the firmware won't recognize it.

I even use these in my tv cyberhome recorder which is 4x speed discs only.I have no trouble with any 8x media in that drive.

Good Luck.

Thanks folks! I had bought these TY discs on the recommendations here and I was anxious to try them. Now I won't have to return them & settle for less.

I'm pretty much a neophyte & even though I just burned at 2x by mistake it appears to have worked perfectly!

Merry Christmas!
