alright,
a month ago i bought 100 dvd+R disks, imation 8speed, mediacode shows they were made by moser bear.
none of them works in my writer, which is a 2.4 speed ricoh dvd+rw drive (laptop) (rw8160, latest firmware v1.08, nero 7, aspi and all that stuff seems fine as i can write my old platinum (cmc mediacode) 8speed dvd+r disks without any problems)
anyway, i've managed to get rid of the imation disks, but now i need new disks and i don't want to be stuck with 100 bad disks. and the company where i buy them is cheap but i can't order like 2 disks or something like that.
so here's the question: which mediacode should i look for? i was going to by yudens, to be sure about the quality, but here's the strange thing: the media support list that came with my drive doesn't mention yuden!! and i thought all drives supported them, but here's the list:
RICOH
MCC
RITEK
CMC
PRODISC
should i take the risk and buy yudens anyway, to be sure they're good quality but then i have the risk my drive won't write them?
if not, which code should i take? i've heard mcc is topquality too.
some advise would be appreciated! thank you!

glad you've 'seen the light' re Imation and/or CMC discs, here's more info on reasons ppl shouldn't use them - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406
As to the media support list, is that all that's on the list, that's a bit stingy of Ricoh (or whoever really made the drive, so much drive rebadging goes on).
anyways, i personally recommend most MCC discs. I've only used 50 Ritek G05 but a few of my buddies swear by them. Prodisc/CMC - Ugh!. i don't know much about Ricoh myself.
p.s i've teleported this thread to the relevant forum also

Yeah, take the risk with the Yudens. You won't be disappointed.
Maxells, made in Japan, are very good too.

tnx, sorry about posting it in the wrong area.
mcc seems great, they're rated first class on this site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
so i'll try to get hold of those.
yurden is considered the best around, but i'm just not ready to take the risk of gettin 100 disks i can't use again :D
my writer... it sucks, i know. that was the complete list i gave :)
anyway, i'm buying a new computer some time soon, i'll get a decent writer too then :)
tnx for the advise

RICOH
MCC
RITEK
Verbatim would be on the MCC coded media. MCC-002 is pretty good,MCC-003 is excellent-8+8x speed and the MCC-004 are the +16x speed. Try to find the +8x verbs.Try to find a 5 pack of the verbatim digital movie quality discs. These will code as MCC-002 and are 4x speed.
Ritek: Majority of the taiwanese +8x maxells will have that code: Ritek-r03.Excellent quality, and they perform just like ty's in my benqs.
Office Depot +8x are also Ritek-r03 and you can get some sweet prices on them when they are on sale.
Ricohs: I know the older maxell +4x that I used were ricohs. They are also on the +16x Office Depot brand media.
It's hard to believe your specs doesn't list taiyo yuden. If you just need a few discs, maxell has a lot of difference spindle and jewel case pack quantities. The plus format maxells in those smaller jewel case packs are usually hitachi or ritek.Consider a pack of 3 or 5 and note the country of origin. Japan makes the hitachi maxells while taiwan makes the ritek maxells.
Quote: i'm buying a new computer some time soon, i'll get a decent writer too then :
Consider the benq 1640. It's a heck of a booktyping DVD-RW drive/dual format/and dual layer. I've got 3 benqs and my booktyped backkups will play just about anywhere I want them to.Mine cost $38 including shipping.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with the verbatum (mcc003) my personal favorite. TY also is very good and ricohjpn and ritek are generally considered good budget media. I used to get some ricohjpn R03 dvd+r's under the branded ritek name. Good media. I've had pretty good luck with the ritek R03's too. Ritek DVD-R media hasn't treated me as well. I agree with my buddy saugmon on the benq DW1620 or DW1640. Excellent drives. Best bang for the buck and very reliable.

alright, another setback.
i got me some verbatim dvd+r's. alas, they sent 16 speed instead of 8 speed. either way:
when i try writing them with the latest firmware (1.0.8), Nero won't even start writing.
i downgraded to 1.0.4 and... he did it! i was all excited, until i tried to read the disk... none of the files works. it's a backup of my home movies and they all fail :(
so i'm stuck again.
i guess i reaaaaally need that new dvd writer :)
if anyone has any ideas for a workaround...
drive : ricoh RW8160 dvd+rw
nero 7
dvd's: mcc004 verbatim's

@rogerKN -
indeed, the 1.08 firmware is dated Apr 2004!!, so the firmware is way out of date to cope with newer media.. -
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1705
The firmware has been neglected by Ricoh since April 2004 (unless their own website has something newer though i very much doubt it), there's been a few of these Ricoh threads recently, at least a couple different drive models have the same exact problem. You're best bet is a new burner

won't be a ricoh burner, that's for sure :-)
either way, i mailed ricoh and this is what i got
Quote: Your drive's maximum recording speed with the latest firmware version for
both DVD+R and DVD+RW is 4x. Therefore, the discs you are using cannot be
recognized. Regarding your question, there are no firmware updates
available at the moment for this model.
We suggest that you use a lower speed media, according to the recommended
brands:
DVD+R: Ricoh,Ritek,MMCC, Verbatim,Philips,Sony
which off course is utter bullshit.
i replied:
Quote: Dear support team,
these disks are multispead. my friend has an old 4x burner and can burn this disk perfectly.
speeds are an indication of the maximum possible speed as you will or should know. please do not mistake me for an ignorant user.
the real reason why it won't work is that the firmware for this drive has not been updated since april 2004.
i really can't appreciate the total lack of support for older products.
i know threathening about not buying ricoh anymore will not change a lot, so i won't.
but i, and with me many others, would appreciate a firmware update for older drives.
thank you.
let's see what happens
roger
