I just got a DVD Burner and i have a lot of movies on my pc. What format do the movies have to be in so that i can put them on the dvd, they are mostly all in AVI. Some are copies of VHS so some dont have menus so i wont need to auth. I just need to know what program would be best to move these movies to a DVD-R so that it can play in my DVD player?

well first u will need to convert the AVIs to a burnable format useing DivXtoDVD or somthing like it. then from there u should be able to burn it using a program that burns wat ever the burnable format is. i myself have never actualy backed up a dvd do to the fact that ive never had a dvd burner drive. if u ask some more expirienced members though im sure they will be able to help u :)

The best way would be to buy a program like DivX to DVD. DivX is a format that will play on a DivX DVD player so you would have to buy one of them as well, they are not too expensive as I bought mine for £60. This DivX player will play most formats accept XviD and the picture and sound is perfect.
If the above option is a no go than you can convert the AVI format to PAL using a program called All Video Converter this is around $29 on the internet. I have heard this program is good and converts almost all formats to PAL or other formats. I hope this helps..

Sorry the program for the DivX is "DivX Create for Windows" and not DivX to DVD. Thanks..

DVD-R is the standard but nowdays dvd player producers have made the players able to play both so ur fine with either DVD +/- R on most players.

ok thx, the only problem im having is that when i burn the movies to dvd+r's after i let WinAVI convert them to DVD on my pc, the dvd wont play in my ps2 or my dvd player. It wouldnt even play on my pc when i put it in my original CD drive. would this have anything to do with the speed im burning it at, because i put it on 16 and it finished withing seconds. what is the best speed to put movies on the disk after theyre converted?

Hello again bygslick

Maybe the convertion went wrong somewhere. Try to convert and burn again on DVD-R this time. The playstation will only take PAL format, try to burn it again after reconverting it to PAL use DVD-R as it could be the +R disc is not compatible.
I have two DVD players and each one takes a different disc ie DVD-R on the Philips and DVD+R on the Pioneer.
I have burned at 16x with no problems. Try to slow down the speed.
If you are using anything below 8x burn at the speed written on the disc it could be that the disc cannot take high speed burning, depending on the make of disc. Most high speed burning is done on the -R disc's.
