Hello all,

When making a backup, do have to select both AC-3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 or can I select one or the other?

Thanks in advance,
James

I only tick the AC3 5.1ch English only. It'll be the larger size audio stream.

I untick all the others. Sometimes you may only hav AC2 5.1,so you'll have to tick it if that's the case.

DTS is usually the biggest audio stream and can usually only be played on a high end audio system. I don't have a really good audio system so I untick it to save myself some compression.

Sorry, I should have stated what software I use. I use DVD Shrink. My home stereo system is both DTS and AC-3 compatible. AC-3 is just another name for Dolby Digital, correct? I would like to leave out as much as I can when I make a backup.

Happy Holidays to all!

thanks,

Well I have to agree with GlueEater, if you have a system that is able to play back DTS soundtrack you can keep it. Many people swear by it as beiing the superior audio stream for various reasons. I keep them both.

Forgot to mention, your DVD player has to be DTS compatible too.

I keep both if available, the DTS blows the 5.1 away.
I have a Sony DVR and Yamaha amp. The sound difference is like listening to a AM radio vs 5.1. I would avise to keep both if you can. Sometimes keeping only the DTS some odd things can happen. Also if you change your equipment or it is played on a none DTS system you will not have any sound.

i really can't speak for other people but I prefer picture quality over sound quality. You take off the DTS and you free up about 10%. It's always like 800MB, the DTS.

yer, i remember seeing a DTS track of a whopping and unrealistic 1.2GB on House of Flying Daggers, that's just daft!. At the end of the day we're only talking about a backup of a movie we already own so 5.1 audio is more than adequate, especially as if we only have a bog-standard stereo TV or whatever, the 5.1 audio will automatically be downmixed to stereo. if you choose DTS and don't have DTS-equipped hardware you'll be hearing silence
