Hello,

Just got my first DVD burner today finally. LG external burner: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/191

I have no issues with copying a dvd movie, lets take Super Troopers for example, onto my hard drive using CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD simultaneously.

Every time I try to burn the files back to a Memorex blank DVD-R, the burning program hangs forever (whether it be Nero 7 premium, CloneDVD, etc.) It will not progress past 1%. It then basically wrecks the disc and cant be used because it is no longer blank. I let it run for 1 hour once, no avail. I have to unplug the DVD burner to eject te disc.

I however, had no issues with burning backup data to disk DVD as just data.

Any help would be wonderful.

PS: the system requirements for my burner are P4 2.8 GHz processor, im only running a P4 mobile 2.0 G. Could that be an issue? It burns data, not movie files.

Memorex are not exactly well known for qualilty. In fact, they along with many other budget discs are the main cause for many failed burns.

Your best bets are Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, or maybe pick a spindle of Sony from your local retailer. Should cure your issues......

Ok will do. Just seems kind of odd. Sure cheap discs should produce some coasters, but you'd think that after 8 or so, one would turn out.

Makes me think something is wrong with the burner.

Thanks I will get new discs, the wife picked those ones while i wasnt there :)

Any other comments from others?

Oh I am well aware that Memorex sucks! :)

But the wife got them from Future Shop with the burner for Christmas, was the salesman's choice. Ha.

Im going to my local PC shop and buying some Taiyo's or some Verbatim's. They stock both.

OMG! Deja-vu! LOL
Sounds familiar...

Orellius, You have a little problem there... It's called cheap media, you get coasters after coasters...
There's a thread somewhere with someone that had the same prob... Trust me, EVERYTHING but EVERYTHING was done to sort it out and in the end it got sorted by buying a LG GSA-4163B Triple Format Double Layer DVD Writer. £60 down Maplin's... And some serious media.

Well, it is not the discs. Soemthing else is wrong. Using Taiyo Yuden DVD-R16X now and same damn thing.

AnyDVD and CloneDVD work fine until it asks me to insert a blank recordable. I insert it, it says burning process is started, and that 35 minutes remain. Well, 1 hour later, 35 min remain, 0% complete.

Cannot eject disc, cannot sht down CloneDVD. Have to turn off drive power first to reset it.

The drive is brand new! And I can only use external drives, im on a laptop :(

@ Orellius:

You have Creaky here, he'll tell you what i went through earlier this year.
Here, check my thread out:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210386

I done everything possible to get it going, had the same problems as you, tried CloneDVD, Nero, DVD Shrink, you name it, i tried it.
I don't know if you carry the same beef, but mine was that i could burn DVD-RW's but not DVD-R's!

I doubt you'll make it, as your system freezes when it's hanging, but if you can, do a burn with a DVD-RW, then post your Nero log here. Creaky will have a look at it.

I read your thread. Seems to be same problem as mine. But you did not ever figure it out!! Ha. Well, at least there was never a solution or you stating that you fixed it.

I checked the whole thread and matched things up and I have pdated ASPI and such things. My memory is good. It just wont work.

I just successfully burned Super Troopers using DVD Shrink and selecting to burn with Nero inside the program. So essentially, DVD Shrink activated Nero itself and it worked. However, if I activate Nero myself and try to burn the EXACT same video files that DVD Shrink left behind, it will hang at 1%.

This worries me. Sure I can use DVD Shrink to do it, but why? It should work with all the other programs. Particularily CloneDVD2, which is my program of choice. X wont work, Nero wont work, and two other programs I tried wont work.

Nero wont burn it in simulation mode either. Only way to abort it is to unplug power from the burner, otherwise the program is frozen.

Grr. Aint turning out to be such a Merry Christmas afterall :p

Alright I found the problem :)

Twas the Firewire connection. The drive has both USB and firewire. I decided to try USB and it worked first try. I then erased the video files from DVD Shrink and re-ripped them using CloneDVD and AnyDVD. When it came to the burning stage it actally worked immediately. Where before, with Firewire, I had made at least 20 coasters lol.

I then tried to burn the video files with Nero and that also worked.

I guess now Im going to try and update the drivers for my firewire (built-in 4-pin port in Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop).

Thanks for any help you guys have given me. Hopefully I can get the firewire working. At least I can use it with SB until then.

No problems :)

Glad you managed to crack it.

No, i never got around it, in the end i formatted the computer as a last resort, but the thing was still there, so i went out and bought an LG (half decent) burner. It works every now and then using DVD Decrypter, Nero still won't touch it, but now i just use my dad's pc for my burnings.
I gave him the Samsung burner that gave me so many prolems, it creams everything i put in it! Bad media, Good media... At the moment i'm having a bit of hassle with some PS2 backups, but that is another story...

@orellius -

glad you're having some success. I don't often read about Firewire-connected problems, but there's quite a few unresolved USB2-enclosure issues out there; nice one and keep us posted
