Hi,

I'm using Nero 6.6. A105 Firmware. 1394. But the fastest Nero will let me burn is at 8x.

The box for my dvd writer says 16x. Does anyone know how I can achieve this?

Could be the disc you're using, could be a guard put on your burner. but I just have to ask, why would you want to burn over 8x? 8x already seems a bit high to me.

why wouldn't i want to burn at 16x? it's faster isn't it?

actually, Nero limits my speed even when there is no media in the drive. the drop box for "write speed" limits my burn to 8x before i click burn. sometimes it says "maximum" and sometimes it says "8x". When i have tried when it says maximum, it ends up being 8x. so technically, Nero isn't aware of what media i'm going to use.

but for the record, i'm using memorex 16x DVD-R.

What's the brand and model of your burner?

Just so you know:

1. memos, suck. That's why so many here call them memosux.

2.16x is WAY too fast, I can almost guarentee you errors everytime.

So you put those two together and you are just asking for a coaster.

Your not getting the point 16X is too fast you will get errors and won't be able to play the disc. 8x is too fast to me. You should right it at 6x or slower. I write mine at 1x and haven't had any errors at all except when I used those cheap ass memorex discs.

Sorry about that, didn't see it.

Do you have a USB2? Externals are generally slower than internal drives.

I don't even understand what you're trying to say w/ that. Sounds like you just want to write at 16x just so you can say you can write at 16x. I'm sure you will mind when it takes you 50 coaster b4 you get a good backup.

years ago, when i bought my first cd-r writer, i had to burn at 2x even tho it was a 4x burner because 4x was unreliable. nowadays, i always burn at max speed for cd's and have no problem.

being a newbie, i gather that everyone thinks that dvd technology isn't reliable enough yet? is this right?

for general backup, i'd like to do it as fast as possible and do it at 16x (and thus get value for purchasing my 16x dvd writer). if i do a system backup later, i'll do it at 4x or something more reliable.

ya i have usb 2.0 and firewire. Nero seems to act the same regardless of how i have the drive plugged in. yes it's an external unit.

you need to insert blank discs BEFORE hitting burn otherwise burner will resort to 'Maximum'.

re 16x, nothing to add that hasn't just been said in other replies..

as to Memorex, see this link from my sig - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
