Recently I upgraded the firmware of my dvd writer from Sony DW-U14A to DRU 510A. Since then I have had nothing but problems burning discs.Prior to the upgrade I always used 4 speed Ritek or Verbatims - /+ no problems, never 1 coaster. Since upgrading I have used Verbatim 16xdvd-
the ratio of good burns to coasters is 1 to 5! This is no bloody good at all. The burner still burns 4x +/- o/k. It won't have 8x at all just spits em back at me!This happens with all my burners - Nero/DVDDecrypter/Pinnacle Instant Copy. Anybody got any idea's?

Why don't you try reflashing with the latest U14 firmware, version 2.0e, found here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1618
I know they would be expected to be the same drive with one being an oem version, but sometimes the way the burner is named in firmware makes a difference, although usually they won't flash unless the particulars match, but who knows for sure.

Thanks for the reply Laddyboy,
Before I try that,I have a few questions.
1.When I did the original upgrade it was from a DWU14A to DRU510A
Surely that means my burner is now a DRU510A? If so ,why upgrade to the latest version of the U14a?
2. This may be obvious to you, but what does OEM mean!

OEM = original equipment manufacturer
The OEMs are the ones available for others to buy to place in computer systems, etc. They generally aren't packaged and labeled or come with software. They are sometimes referred to as bulk. The DRU 510s are the ones packaged and labeled and sold by Sony to consumers at retail stores. For all practical purposes they are the same hardware although firmwares tend to be catalogued differently and in some cases may not be interchangeable, although they are most of the time for most manufacturers.
Sony isn't making their own drives any longer. They switched to using Lite-On burners and more recently, BenQ. I also might add that your burner is becoming long in the tooth and that you might want to consider upgrading to a newer model especially if you're interested in DL burning. New burners are around $40US.

Thanks for that.In regard to the burner being long in the tooth, you must be a mind reader as I was thinking along the same line myself.
First I'll try the upgrade,then if I still get any problem I'll get
a new burner.Keep you posted. Thanks.

I have an LG burner and i emailed them about my specific drive not being listed, and if i could cross flash. This is what they said in part:

While the product may have the same model number as in another country, and even the physical appearance may be the same, the internal components will be different in accordance with requirements of that country.
They have to say that to protect themselves in case you incorrectly flash a drive. I knew the firmware updates will only work for the specific drive, unless it is a hacked firmware.
Getting a newer drive is probably your best bet. I recently got a 21 yr old girlfriend, and she is much better than the older model i had :).

Hi ALL,
It was really bugging me ,so I tried increasing burn speed first to 4x,then 8x - no luck, so then just out of curiosity , with DVDDecrypter I tried 1x.Superb ! No problems at all. But- it ain't half slow! Still never mind at least it doesn't cost me anything except time.

My problem is solved. I have just installed an NEC ND3550A burner.
What a performer! It reads a disc in 5/6 mins where my old Sony 510A took 27 mins ! Burns a 16 speed verb in 12.5 mins @ 4x (I don't like to burn 'em to fast) To change the subject here , recently I played on my stand alone dvd player my copy of "The Everly Brothers Reunion Concert" . After about 10 mins the damn thing froze on me , so I took out the disc and cleaned it with a screen-clene. Put it back in and damn me it froze again. Next I cleaned the lens with Fellowes lens cleaner also I examined the disc surface to see if there was any scratch there. all o/k.Put it in again ,play freeze again ,always the same place. So I thought that if the disc is claen ,the lens is clean there's no scratch on the disc that there is only one thing left that could cause the disc to freeze - the label. So I peeled off the label , Good God ! what a job. But what a difference. Disc plays o/k now. So no more sticky labels.I've bought an Epson R220 printer which prints directly on to cd/dvd .
