problems renaming VOB to MPG

Sorry for the newb questions, but:

How reliable is renaming a single VOB file (generated from DVD Decrypter) to MPG?

Also, it seems that closed captioning doesnt carry over and that the play length is always shown as 0:00...

Is there a way get closed captioning without reconverting the VOB first (I want to keep the bit-for-bit quality of the original VOB)

I should clarify just a bit:

I want the closed captioning to be retained in the VOB/MPG file in the manner that televisions, media center 2k5, and xbox360 can be used to optionally turn it on or off.

I don't want permanent subtitles or cc to show embedded in the video (plus that woud require a conversion of the video stream which i dont want).
