Ok, first off there is a new type of copy protection on the Brothers Grimm dvd. It's either Arccos or RipGuard or something similar. What it does is create blank cells in the first chapter of the movie as well as in PGC#2. As many of you have found out, if you try to use DVD Shrink on the Brothers Grimm you will receive an error. The current way around this is to rip in file mode with DVD Decrypter, then use VOB Blanker, then use DVD Shrink. But if you're only concerned with backing up the main movie files then there's a much easier way.
Just skip to the last paragraph for info on backing up Brothers Grimm. If you're interested in how to do this for any movie then keep reading.
First step, you need to determine how many blank cells are contained at the beginning of the movie and how much time they represent. This can be done a couple of different ways.
The first option is to simply play the dvd in your dvd player and turn on the time display. Keep pressing step/pause on your remote until you see the production company logo, then write down the time count. For the Brothers Grimm dvd it's 0:00:03. Then skip to the second to last chapter in the movie and fast forward until the final credit has left the screen and the sound has stopped. Then write down that time count. (01:58:21)
The second option is to use dvd decrypter in IFO mode. However, with this method YOU WILL BE GUARANTEED TO EXPERIENCE ERRORS. The first few times you try to access the dvd in ifo mode, you will receive an error that may even freeze the program. If it does freeze just hit ctrl-alt-del and end the dvddecrypter task. Then try it again. Eventually it will open in ifo mode if you have enough patience. One suggestion is to set it to file mode before you insert the dvd and then switch to ifo mode. You may also try changing the settings to ignore read errors. Once you finally access the dvd you can click on the first chapter and see the blank cells listed. The movie actually starts with the last cell listed in the first chapter. ALL EMPTY CELLS MUST BE REMOVED. You will also notice that the entire PGC#2 is filled with blank cells. Hold your mouse over the first chapter and write down the time. Then hold your mouse over the last cell in chapter one and write down the time. The time difference between the two is what you will need to remove. There is also a blank cell in the final chapter which I also recommend removing. These blank cells are commonly found at the end of movies so it may not affect the decryption at all, but I would still remove it.
Now that you know how much time to remove, open dvd shrink and click on reauthor. Drag the main movie over to the left screen area. Then right click on the main movie file and click "Set start/end frames". Keep pressing the |> button until it reaches 00h 00m 03s 06fr. Then change the ending frame to chapter 22 or 01h 58m 21s 01fr. Click ok and then start the shrinking process. I recommend creating an iso image and then burning with dvd decrypter. Anyway, that's it. You now have a perfect backup.

AnyDVD is a great way to rip with all the copy right protections and things like that but for this movie no matter how you rip it, it still doesn't allow you to shrink it with DVD Shrink

Well, I just tried using DVDFab Express and it worked. Then VobBlanker to remove the unwanted garbage, and then DVD Shrink. Seems like a PITA to go through all this but it does work. One question, with VobBlanker, how do I determine which part I want to blank? I am new at this so bear with me. DO I simply right click on the file and view it? Then balnk it if I want to remove it?

The only decryption utility you need is DVD Shrink. The original post by pccode was simply explaining how to create a backup without using multiple programs. You don't need dvd43, dvdfab, anydvd, or vobblanker. All you need is DVD Shrink.
Just open DVD Shrink.
Select reauthor.
Open the Brothers Grimm dvd.
Select main movie only.
Set start/end times.
Start (00h 00m 03s 06fr)
End (ch 22)
Click backup and save to iso.
Burn with DVD Decrypter.

I couldn't even get Decrypter to run with this movie. Decrypter would freeze immediately upon opening the disc. Mad a complete backup with AnyDVD and Clone DVD.

The reason some people can't get shrink to work is because you should select re-author BEFORE you analyse the disc contents.
that's why it hangs or whatever... If you open up shrink and select re-author mode straight away..then insert your movie, browse to the dvd drive that you have the movie in... then it'll show the main movie, menus, extras etc.. just select the main movie and drag it into the left window, then it'll analyse it... select the compression tab and select/deselect the subtitles and sound streams you want in the movie. Then in the re-authored dvd area..above the window that you had to drag the movie into, on the right hand side is a button that looks like 2 arrows going opposite directions..select that and you can now set the start and end frames of the movie...

I am a newbie here so can you tell me why we need to select the time and chapter you mentioned rather than just the main move?
Thanks for your help

By setting the start time at 3 seconds you are bypassing the arccos protection. There are blank cells contained at the beginning of the movie in chapter 1 that will cause errors if you don't bypass them. Refer to the first post for more info.

If you have AnyDVD, just run the movie through VobBlanker and then shrink will work normally. VobBlanker requires the movie to be unencrypted, which AnyDVD will do, and removes the unwanted cells so that shrink can do it's work. DVD43 may work also. Haven't tried it. You can get the whole movie this way if that's what you want.

SOrry if this is a silly question but I am still not sure about backing up dics.
If I have the trial version of AnyDVD I need it to be running in the background and then use Shrink and open the movie in shrink and let it preview and all should be fine or must I use another program before shrink>
Thanks

Here's a more elegant way to remove those blank cells at the start of
the movie. Just rip the movie in file mode with DVD Decrypter or DVD
Fab. Now open the folder with PGC Edit 0.61 or 0.62. Find the movie's
PGC - it will usually have the longest running time. Open it. Look at
the cell list. The blank cells will have 0:00:00 playback time and no
sectors. Select "Remove Cells", then "Cell Range." Select a range of
blank cells to remove. Now you can burn the disc or process the files
in whatever way you please.
Using VobBlanker is a big waste of time for getting rid of dummy cells
like this. Just learn to use PGC Edit instead. It has a lot of awesome
features, like changing cell flags and adding blank cells.

Hey guys I'm still having a little trouble with Brothers Grimm.
I've run it through dvdfab, run those results through VOB blanker & then when I go to DVD Shrink it doesn't give me the "out of memory" error, anymore but when it checks the disc to make sure there's enough space it comes up with the "not enough room" error. I've nixed every file that's not the actual movie, or the bonus features... so does anyone know what file is "replicating" to suck up space?

I have used 1Click DVD with DVD43 and I have never had a problem of backing up my DVDs. Try them as they are great software.
