if u have a capture device then u can use freeware ( some available in the software section here at ad or u can use nero, ulead, roxio.powerproducerand the list goes on) myself i prefer roxio . as long as u have the proper hardware ( capture card or external device like ads dvdxpress or something along that line. wire up your video device-vcr-camcorder ect -start your capture software-select the video format vcd=mpeg1 - dvd=mpeg2 - svcd=mpeg2 avi and the list goes on . if u have a small processor and limited memory then capture to vcd as it will capture more smoothly. if u have lots of processing power p3 2ghz or above u can capture in dvd and svcd format ok . once your wired properly gather up all the tapes u want clips out of. put your first video in and find the specific part of the video u want to capture and pause the device the video cassete is in and hit the start capture to your hdd button. then start your video device back up . when you want to stop capturing just tick the stop capture tab on the software you are running on your computer. just keep repeating this process till you have all the footage you want. once you have your video captured to your hard drive open the editing or authoring part of your software and drag and drop those clips in the order you want them ( most software has a story line with little boxes u put your video clips in) then select transisons u want in between each clip add your music if u wish --- remove native audio if you wish and tick the burn button . dont be alarmed if it takes a while to burn your project as video authoring is very intense on pc's . i no your probably confused -- the best way to learn is reading your software guide inside and out and get yourself aquainted with the difrent types of compression --- mpeg1 2 and ect . then just dig in your not going to hurt anything or screw your software up . thats how i learned . i never even sought help on a forum ( though didnt no one exsisted or i would of) and i have transformed all our homevideos to dvd -- some just straight conversion to disc and some with effects and all the bells and whistles. i will tell u if u decide to make your dvd with all kinds of effects and editing you will have hours into your projects but it is very worth it and you your family will love what you did with all those memories . once your projects are burnt to disc you can use any burning app to make as many copies as you want in a flash . you wont have to go through the authoring process again.--unless u want to make changes to the disc . most of the authoring software out there will let u go back and edit the disc even after it has been burnt.if you srew up it wont be a total loss . just digin and play you will have lots of fun. its very rewarding . at least for me . i will be glad to help but u should get your hands dirty first and then you will start to understand some of what im talking about. u can always lean on ad for support as there is alot of very very smart video editors that are members here that im sure you will bump into here that can help u alot more than me . ill be glad to help where i can . good luck and have fun
