I can't backup any discs. I only got one to work. I have most of the software. I am using Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01). I get that says something like bad medium. I will try to get a screenshot.

That media is absolute crap. Get Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Made in Japan labeled Fuji or Sony media.

Also burn at 4X or half the rated speed of the media.

Don't burn all the way to the edge. Set the target size to custom and 4350 or 4400 for 4.7GB media.

It doesn't hurt to booktype your +R media as DVD-ROM either, but first things first, get some good quality media. Without that, nothing else matters.

no. absolutely do not burn with the media you have. use them as coasters, wall decorations, frisbees...even grind them up and add them to paint for a pearl effect, but don't burn with them.

any verbs stamped "made in japan" will be fine :D

No one can guarantee this will fix your problem, but without good quality media, you start out in a big hole.

What is the brand and model of your burner. Also do you know its firmware version number? The firmware number is the letters and/or numbers displayed after the burners name in most burning and utility programs.

What software are you using? Most here use DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and AnyDVD. Many also use the Nero Suite.

Don't burn over 4X or half the rated speed of the media either for good quality burns.

We'll likely get your problems straightened out forthwith so don't worry.

I'll be away for a couple hours or so and won't be able to reply, but others may.

Your firmware seems a little out of date. The latest version seems to be BSOY. I would update by flashing the new firmware to your drive.

Devon, is this a Liteon labeled drive or is it a rebadged Liteon from another company?

Download DVD Identifier and report back the name of the burner if you're not sure. The download site is in my signature below.

Yes that's it, Devon. It's definitely a LO 1633S. As to why it won't update the firmware, I think you're going to have to do it in steps because yours is so out of date. I'll look around later and see if I can fuind some older 1633 firmware. I guess we're trying to jump too many versions for it to work since it's so out of date. Maybe smeone else knows where all the older firmware is housed in the meantime.

The drive is an older one. I have the same drive and purchased mine well over a year ago. I don't use it anymore though. Since the 1633 there has been the 1653, 1673, and now the 1693.

D evin, I posted a big response to you yesterday afternoon and somehow it didn't get posted. I guess I should have checked before I closed the window. This was the link I had posted. :)

Just run LtnFW utility program. One of the options is to backup the current firmware. Then use the same utility to select the downloaded firmware and flash the new. You'll have to go in steps starting with the earliest firmware, BS01. If that flashed, then jump to the next level, BSOC, etc. These jumps may still be too big. If they are then go back to the last firmware in the previous level and try that one.

There's some mini-instructions on this thread:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83294

Download the firmware to your desktop so it'll be easy to find when you go to flash.

I got BS01 to run just fine. Do I need to reboot after each update? which one should I try next? In the taskbar the cd drive comes up as new hardware is this normal?

You should be able to go to the latest firmware. Part of the problem probably was your old firmware BGS4. All 1633 firmware starts with BS. Someone may have flashed it with the wrong firmware previously. That could cause the new firmware to not recognize it as a 1633. Fortunately you managed to get it flashed with the BS01 firmware. Yes you should reboot after installing new firmware. With a firmware update ypur computer should see it as a new drive. That's why you need to reboot. You don't have to update in steps. You should be able to go to the newest one, BS0Y. It is more difficult to go to an earlier firmware, but if you don't like a newer one you can go back although I haven't done it in a while since the newest is usually the best.

Dave

Don't worry about the new device message. You don't have to restart your system in between. It's a drive thing, not an OS thing.
