i've used DVD Shrink without problem for over a year. Now in the past few tries I've been having the following problem:

the movie appears "choppy" and then whatever DVD player I'm using stops reading the disc. I've checked the ISO files in the folder that Shrink copies the files to and they appear choppy too. The movie plays for a few seconds and then freezes, starts again and then freezes again.

I use Nero as the burning software but I don't think that's the issue since the ISO files aren't working properly anyway.

I tried deleting DVD Shrink and reloading but the problem still exists.

Any advice?!???

help!

could be a bad original disc. Was the original scratched? Did the original sskip like the back up? And do you have the quality settings on?

i don't think it's a bad original disc as this has happened on at least 5 different movies. i'm getting tired of ruining blank discs!

the files that get written to the hard drive are labeled "ATI" files so I'm wondering if it has to do with my ATI software.

Shrink has worked for me in the past year but only in the last month has it been giving me this problem.

maybe I'll try deleting some of the ATI software and reinstalling...

What kind of media are you using to burn onto?

You can also try using some of DVD Shrinks quality settings. Set AEC controls to maximum smoothness and use the Deep Analysis function. These settings will considerably increase the time taken to backup your movie, but if you don't create coasters I think it is worth the extra time. Also don't burn at more than 4X or multitask during the burn. And as 9mmruger mentioned about the discs...have you recently changed brands? Use only quality media to make your backups on, some recommended brands would include Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan).

I've wasted TDKs, Maxells, and Verbatim discs so far. I don't think it's the media since the files on the computer that are then transferred to the DVD disc are choppy and don't play without freezing every few seconds. My video card is an ATI All In Wonder and I recently activated the TV function on the card.

I've tried the "maximum smoothness" setting but have not tried a deep analysis.
thanks for all the replies!

what is DVDD?

DVDD or DVD Decrypter is arguably the best ripper/burner available for free on the internet. No longer being updated for legal reasons, but is still available on a few sites...try mrbass.org

EDIT: I also see that you are using Nero, how about supply us with a log and we can see what's going on there.

If it's bad files on the hd, you will more than likely have to re-rip the movie to get a clean rip. DVDdecrypter will do it very well.

thanks for all the advice!

I actually have DVD Decrypter downloaded already. I've never used it for ripping so I don't know how to use it other that hitting the one button to start the darn thing! I started it and it finished. From there I didn't know what to do and I haven't looked for a DVDD guide yet. I assume there is a guide on how to use DVDD on this site???

Ripping with Decrypter is pretty easy. You can make an ISO or use Files mode.

File mode is the method I prefer so that's what I'll go over.

First, open DVDD and go to Mode > File.
That puts DVDD in file mode.
Below that, set the Source as your ROM or whatever drive you are reading the original with.
Below that, set your Destination. You want to make sure it is in a location you can find again. Use the "Make A New Folder" button.
Put your original in, let it get spun up and select the start button which is the arrow between the DVD and the drive. That should do it.

Once DVDD is finished it will play it's little song. You can close it and then open Shrink.
Select "Open Files" and find the files that DVDD made and select the VIDEO_TS folder. Proceed as usual.

If you want to do it in ISO mode, then instead of opening Mode >Files, open Mode > ISO > Read.
When you finish with the ISO, open Shrink, select File > Open Disc Image.

I would recommend not messing with all the files that will appear in the window on the right. Copy the entire thing and then sort it out with Shrink. There is a good chance you will damage the file structure if you try and edit with Decrypter.

Good Luck,
Frank

I'll give it a go in awhile and report back to you on my results. The rain here has uncovered a leak in a skylight that I have to deal with!!!

success!
sort of...

ok, so i ran a movie thru DVDD and then checked the files it created with DVD Shrink. The files are running/playing smoothly!

now the problem is this:

it is requesting a DVD-R/RW disc be inserted for the writing portion. It never did this before (ask specifically for -R) and I only have DVD+R disc right now. It says I should "modify the settings of my compilation."

where would I do this????

thanks in advance!

hey raggedy1,

It looks like you may have a burner that only supports DVD-R and DVD-RW media, if this is the case consider upgrading to a multi-format drive. If your drive only supports DVD-R and DVD-RW media, those DVD+Rs you got are useless with this drive.

What version of nero do you have and how are you using it to burn your video files? Make sure nero is setup for burning to a DVD-5.

hi john,
i'm using a sony dual layer dvd burner that I've used for the past year without problem. i've used -R, +R and dual layer discs with no problems.

this problem just arose after I used DVDD and then Shrink. In the past I used Shrink only until lately where I had the problem I originally wrote this thread about.

So DVDD took care of the original problem, but now Shrink is asking for a -R disc only.

any other ideas?

Have you changed the type of media you're using , and can you post your drives model number and firmware rev.

I'd still like to know what version of Nero you've got and how you are using it to burn your files.

Are you using the burn with Nero option with dvdshrink?

Try removing and reinstalling Shrink. That seems to work when the program misbehaves. It only takes a couple of minutes.

no, there have been no changes.

the only change is me using DVDD and using "files" in DVDD before using Shrink. Then in Shrink I searched for the DVDD file instead of reading directly from the original source DVD/movie.

Nero, lets see...

nero burning rom 6.3.1.10

deleting and resinstalling Shrink.

that's what I did when I first encountered the orginal problem I wrote about.

Now I'm having this new problem!

i also just downloaded the latest update for AnyDVD if that would make any difference.

my sony burner supports all types of DVD discs (+, -, RW and DL)

hmm, I just checked Nero Info Tool and under 'drive' it says for "supported write features"... well it doesn't have the DVD+R/RW box checked! Hmm, why would that be if the Sony burner supports this type of disc, I used it in the past and I only have 3 discs left out of the original 25 disc packet! So I know it used to write to +R discs.

"nero burning rom 6.3.1.10"

You're version is way out of date, the current version is 6.6.0.18, follow the link, download and install package 1 and 2(w/out the tool bar).

Stll would like to see your drives model number and firmware rev level.

this is what the Nero window says after I tried my +R disc where I'm supposed to insert a blank disc:

Sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this type of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings on your compilation to make them compatible with the current disc.
