MOST verbatims, at least here in the U.S., will be MADE IN TAIWAN...you can read from the vast OTHER threads in this forum that Verbatim is one of the "few exceptions" to the generally accepted lingo here on afterdawn to the "made in taiwan vs. made in japan" debate~ :)

what you got is the "GOOD" stuff if that is your question...

over in the UK, the ONLY "made in japan" Verbatim's i've heard of are the Verbatim TYs that creaky has quite a lot of...they are MANUFACTURED in japan by Taiyo Yuden, but are branded VERBATIM...hence, "Verbatim TYs" :)

all the hundreds of Verbs. i've used in the past are ALL made in taiwan, with the exception of my "made in singapore" Verbatim DVD+R DL media...

no worries...

I'm sure at some point there'll probably be less and less DVDs made in Japan with production shifting to Taiwan/China and India. So Long as the production quality is the same it won't make a difference. That said, I see more and more crap brands @ the big box stores. It's the pc stores that will specialize in the "high quality" media which will be harder to find and more expensive. There will be a huge glut of cheap media everywhere u turn. Getting that way now...

as is the way with business/profits/greedy companies~ :)

production of crappy dvd media will CONTINUE to skyrocket as the "brands" will continue to outsource to the cheapest manufacturer they can find at the time to produce their discs, then in turn "rebrand" them to sell under the companies' name...and make a HUGE profit...

not much WE, as the consumers, can do about it..just have to be "smart and knowledgeable" about what media TO BUY or what media to simply pass by...

Hey kivory666 - I was just skimming through and noticed in your sig that you have burned over 4200 discs. If I do the math correctly, that would be close to 8400 discs counting the originals, assuming you back up each disc only once. My question - where/how do store all of these discs? I have this image in my mind of you having to rent one of those monthly "U-Store-It" units! I have about 275 originals and back-ups (500 total) and my wife is already griping about the space they take up. I use standard and slimline cases. I was just wondering how you store your's and if they take up alot of space? Also, I wish I had an "allowance" (cough, cough) like your's to put into buying originals/blank media. Anyway, just wondering about the storage.

@jpc00

hi, yeah, well, i store all my backups in a dedicated room i have in my house...i happen to use 240 disc capacity binders (about a dozen of them that my wife bought me somewhere) and store them upright to reduce the weight being placed ONTO the discs~ :)

my originals, i built a shelving system in the same room on 3 of the 4 walls...these obviously are stored upright as well in the cases they came in when purchased...

i haven't made a backup of EVERY ONE of my originals as of yet, i simply do not have the time for that...sorting through thousands of discs, taking them in and out of cases is very time consuming... :)

i do make multiple backups of my movies, the running tally in my sig. is an approximation, give or take 50 discs...i buy my blank Taiyo Yuden in bulk as i have a direct connection with Taiyo Yuden here in North America...so, my price is usually less than what other consumers pay... :)

as to my "allowance", i make a decent living as a M.D., dvd backups/various burners/drives and a shedload of media are just "hobbies" of mine to keep me sane...

good day to you

docTY~

Hey kivory666 - Thanks for the reply. I was originally using binders for mine but it was getting to be a real pain to try keeping them organized so that I could find one readily. Thats the only reason for me switching to cases. I also am planning to build some shelving into my storage room to hold the cases and then alphabetizing them.

PS... I have seen your replies to many others posts and on more than a few occasions have found them helpful myself. Keep up the good work and thanks for all of your "indirect" help I have gotten from you and many others at this site.

no worries, i aim to please...thank you for the kind words regarding how helpful i have been to you, whether directly or indirectly~ appreciation is always welcome in my book~ :)

may you have continued success with your backups and hopefully, when time comes for your shelving, may it be MORE organized than MY current setup which is next near impossible to find ANYTHING in a reasonable amount of time~ :)

clu05- Another Taiwan manufactured Brand that is an exception to the Japan vs. Taiwan debate orissue is Ritek ! You may see them in stores under other brand names Maxell ( Made in taiwan) or OFFice Depots own brand of media (also Ritek) and if you can catch one of their Buy one get two free sales you can really bulk up your media supply cheaply ! and other than cosmetics Ritek G-05's are ritek G-05's whether they say office depot or maxell or ritek on the packaging ! That being said I would put riteks as a third choice dependant on price mind you on my media short list ! Taiyo Yuden/ Fuji-MIJ ) Verbatims , Riteks /maxells /officedepot ! the Officedepot /riteks are/were the /8X - Office depot has some newer media out with 16x and different manufacturer different packaging - The new 16x stuff is in a mostly blue wrapper - * the 8x dvd'd re in a red white & blue wrapper you acn tell the difference once you've ssen both !And on the supply of made in japan media drying up I would say it's one of them YES /NO situations ! Yes it looks like the Beloved supply of made in japan Fuji's /taiyo yudens has dried up somewhat ( Darn It !) but you can still Find Maxells (Made in Japan)! if you poke around a bit and SONY 'S Made in japan Are taiyo yudens even though they code out as sony's ! And the Made in Japan Sony media is was plentiiful at BestBuy atleast around Nov/Dec. Now thiis may a Local phenomenon so check your local store but it's worth a try ! The key is always look where it's made & buy good media & always burn baby burn Good luck ^ happy burning!

gurnard- Thanks O' Fishy one - No never have used Arita branded riteks - Only exposure to riteks have been Maxells & OffICEDEPOT's own media ! But will remember not to buy Arita now ! Though don't think that will be a problem because ritek Branded riteks are usually an online sourced item corect? I mean available thru online retailers only right? Thanks Gunard will keep that in mind ! Happy swimming & Happy Burning !
