I have just downloaded Saving Private Ryan from Bearshare and I now want to compress this so it should fit on a 4.7 GB DVD. Can someone please give me some help on how to do this?

Please do not mention any P2P file sharing programs on forums as afterdawn does not condone copyright infringement.
What size is the file and what format is it in?

Oh right I won't metion it again. The file is in avi format and is 679MB long. I have heard people talking about compressing files before burning onto DVD but I just don't know how to do it

ZANDER85-- First you need to convert the AVI file to DVD file--
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/divxtodvd/divxtodvd.php--then if larger than 4.3GB use DVD Shrink to compress--available here or at the site under my sig--have fun

Compressing files makes them smaller, what you need to do in this instance is to encode the file(make it bigger). There are several programs available, some free, others not, my personal preference is WinAvi video converter(free trial available), to encode the .AVI file to mpeg2 which is DVD format for later burning to DVD. Open WinAvi and point it to the .AVI file and choose convert to DVD(depending on the speed of your computer), encoding should take only a few minutes. Afterwards use Nero burning rom.

It is true compressing files does make them smaller but in the case of converting an avi file, it may be larger than 4.3g, after conversion and 4.3g is all you can fit on a DVD5 disk. You then need to use a program like DVD Shrink or Nero Recode to compress your file to fit this size disk unless you are using a dual layer media.
