Hi! I've been lurking for a few months but this is my first post and my question is probably retarded (so if I screw up, please forgive).
I desperatly want to use verbatim discs but my dvd burner isn't compatable. Is there a patch or something to download so it CAN use the verbatim media?

how is your drive/burner NOT compatible???

please let me know what model drive/brand you are currently using, might just be as simple as a firmware upgrade (if available) :)

i have not found a drive YET, that is "incompatible w/ Verbatim" :P

I'm with docTY~ on this one. I have yet to see a drive that does not Love Verbatim Media. What brand & model drive is this that isn't compatible with Verbatims? Again, I'm with Doc, probably only a firmware update is needed. Unless it's a VERY OLD Drive or some weird brand, I can't see it not being compatible with Verbatim Media. It may not support maximum burn speeds, but it surely should be able to use Verbatim Media.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Hi docTY and bunnyrip (wow you guys answered quickly)!

Again, thank you for being so patient with me(in general)and with forgetting to put in any specifics for you to work with in my post! Like you, I also found this a very strange problem especially b/c our old burner burned verbatim discs fine (not from the same spindle as these though).

The burner is "pioneer DVD-RW dvr-109 [fw 1.40]" and able to burn up to 16x speed and (as of september) new. The discs I have are the verbatim DVD+R 8x and DVD-R 8x and memorex DVD-R 16x. There have been no problems burning with the memorex media and I always burn at 2.4x speed.

The verbatim thing is really weird because sometimes (with the DVD+R 8x) it will burn the disc but then it locks up when we try to watch them. When we try to open the burned dvd on the pc, it complains that the disc is either 'corrupted or not formatted' and others the
computer immediately spits the disc out and shows it as "error inaccessible". The Verbatim DVD-R 8x burn properly every now and then and never have the error problems I just described - they just don't work.

I think I may have misspoken when I said the Verbatim were incompatible where really, in addition to not working, they are just not in the burner's user manual under supported discs.

When you mentioned the firmware, I checked it out and it probably does need to be updated. I'm a bit frightened to do it though b/c (I've never updated firmware before) in most places that I've searched under 'firmware' there usually is a disclaimer saying "Firmware WARNING - Improper flashing of firmware may result in an inoperable drive".

I did use "DVD Identifier" to check the discs. The verbatim discs come up as [DVD-R:MCC 02RG20] and [DVD+R:MCC-003-000] and the Memorex come up as [DVD-R:CMC MAG. AM3].

Again - thank you for being willing to help me with this (I've been trying to fix it for so long I think I'm beginning to go insane!).

first off...

Memorex come up as [DVD-R:CMC MAG. AM3]. = Junk

get rid of those discs..

also.. since you are using (+) format.. you may not be booktyping on this one that is why they wont play. again, that goes back to firmware issues. newer firmware would for sure help with doing that. it is also called bitsetting.

chances are, that's what is part of the issue...

i'm not at all an expert or even that good.. but i have been reading a few posts here with all sorts of issues..

listen to docTY... he knows his stuff..

You shouldn't worry about the firmware warning. They put that there to protect themselves.

I have flashed my drives and never had an issue. These flashed are designed for your drive. Just download the latest version to your desktop, close all programs, and double click on it. It should self install without a hitch.

Cheers.

hello hello~ :)

i happen to use the same drive as you, how convenient~! :) the pioneer dvr-109 is MY fastest drive...however, i can sense your hesitancy about firmware flashing...i have a modified firmware on MY pioneer, which allows it to "booktype/bitset", but after hearing about your concerns, i would suggest against it~ :)

normally, using official Pioneer firmware, the dvr-109 WILL not booktype DVD+R to dvd-rom, yes, it's unfortunate, but there ARE ways around it if you want to take the added risk...but, anyways, your firmware is REALLY old...the newest OFFICIAL one is 1.58, found here:

http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-e/ibs/device_e/file/DVR109_FW...

it's very simple...download the file onto your harddrive...double click the .exe file and follow the instructions...

it only takes a few minutes to upgrade your firmware, as long as the power does not go down (don't turn off your computer DURING the flash, that is one of the ONLY things you need to worry about) :)

and there ya go...you will have the newest firmware after a 3-step process, just wait until you see the "firmware successfully updated" message or something along those lines, and then REBOOT after you see the success message~ :)

also, the Verbatim media you have is very good, i have over a thousand of the MCC003 8x DVD+R media burned already on my pioneer drive, so i KNOW for a fact it IS compatible/works~ :) unfortunately, with the OFFICIAL firmware, you will NOT be able to booktype the DVD+R to dvd-rom...if you want a step-by-step guide as to how I did it, feel free to PM me... i'll show u how~ :)

ditch the Memorex...my pioneers are NOT fond of CMC MAG media...don't matter which speed they are rated at~ :P

good luck, let me know if you have any other questions...firmware is important for that drive...once it's done, i have a good feeling you will be enjoying yourself with the GOOD media you have now (Verbatim) and you will be pleased with your backups~

I currently use Verbatim 8X DVD+R with a Plextor 712A burner. This combination allows me to burn only as slow as 4X, which is fine because I know I'll get a good burn at that speed. (I used to be able to burn as slow as 2X when using blank 4X disks.) My question is this: If I buy Verbatim 16X DVD+R blank media, does anyone know if my burner/disk combination will still allow me to burn at the 4X speed? Or will I now only be able to get a slowest burn speed of something faster than 4X? Thanks in advance.

thelox714 - Not sure if your last post was meant for me or not. In any case, I downloaded and installed the firmware for the Plextor712A. I thought I was up to date, but I wasn't. Thanks!
