Hi Everyone,
I am very new to this encoding stuff and it would be great if somebody could help me.
1. On DVD Decrypter - if I want to copy a DVD to a Drive (assumming this is a movie) I am a little confused on the difference between the Modes. Somes tutorials say use 'file mode and select all' and some say create an 'ISO'.
Does it depend on what I want to do with the file ie play DVD on computer only or encode the file in a different format?
Will 'file mode' let me select the DVD file later on and use with say 'Fairuse Wizard' to convert or do I have to use 'ISO' mode straight way? Was has prompted me to ask the question is that on the Fairuse Wizard it only asks about selecting an 'ISO' image or DVD Drive?
Your help is much appreciated
Melvyn

Hi, welcome to the forum. In my signature there is a guide for using DVDdecrypter that will help you understand it.
I personally use the File mode and have selected main movie and IFO's.
I then use DVDShrink to create the ISO so that it will be compressed to fit on a DVD5 disc.
If you use decrypter to make the ISO it will not be compressed but will be a 1:1 copy of the movie that you are copying. This would mean that you would have to use a DVD9 disc (dual layer) which is more expensive.
You can play the movie on your computer when ripped in file mode, and create the iso later if needed.

Thank you very much for the reply - most helpful.
What I actually want to do is transfer my original DVD's to my PC to watch, then I want to have the option to encode these using 'Fairuse Wizard' to play on my Archos AV500 later on. I do not want to backup on DVD.
Is their any benefit in using DVD Shrink in this case? will the quality of the conversion be different using the compressed ISO image from DVD Shrink against using an uncompressed ISO image using DVD Decrypter?
Thanking you in advance

I don't have any experience with this, so I cannot give you a direct answer regarding it. I would assume that if you do not have a DVD5 limitation however, a 1:1 would produce better results because there would not be any compression.
Cheers.

Thanks for that - no problem.
Just one other question - When I use DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD to my hard drive in 'ISO' mode, in what situation would I use 'read' and in what situation would I use 'write'. Does it matter?
Thanks

ISO read/write mode is mostly reserved for use with double layer discs. It is usually recommended to use the file mode for ripping and then an encoding tool such as Nero Recode or DVD Shrink to manipulate the image. Of course the file created with the encoding program is an ISO image which would be burnt in ISO write mode (so my first statement wasnt totally true.

I recommend using Mode, File F -- yes, with File Mode, you can have VobBlanker to filter out and process any bad/protected sectors, and you'll still have the full disc movie. Mode, ISO is usually good for 1:1 or DL copy and or the "main movie" only when processing with DVD Shrink.
However, the choice is yours.

...or when the original is capable of being put to a DVD-5 with no compression, ISO mode is also useful.
