Can anyone educate me on the best DVD blanks to use when making backups of movies?
Are DVD-R better than DVD+R or vice-versa?
Thanks in advance.

hi
well, i use -R and find it ok! these are called RITEK with ritek GO5 dye info on discs...
now alot here say use +R and booktype these as dvd-rom it will make it even more compatible in stand alone players...
your drive needs the booktype/bitsetting feature though!
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Best media:
Taiyo yuden and verbatim are considered the finest dvd media out there. They feature the metal azo dye.Using the quality media will prevent many issues later on down the road.
Plus/dash: These are just different formats. It all depends on your stand alone players/game consoles/and pc drives. Some of them may favor a certain format/both formats/or neither. Backups can do some strange things on some of those stand alone players.
I booktype the plus format(Quality) media to dvd-rom with all 3 of my benqs. Not all burner drives support this feature, but it actually gives you a 3rd format to use when it comes down to stand alone compatability.
You'll have to find the format that best suits all your drives. You'll notice when a drive doesn't like a certain format: No disc/dirty disc errors.
The biggest factor in the different formats besides stand alone compatability,is the media quality can change considerably between the same brand name/same quantity packaging/but different format. There's many different manufacturers out there producing media for maxell/fuji/sony/tdk/memosux/phillips/etc. This means you can have a corp like CMags making media for:Phillips/tdk/memosux/teon/staples/compusa/etc.
Fuji is a good example how quality can vary between the 30 pack plus and dash formats.
Taiyo yuden makes some of those 30 packs in the Plus format/some of the dash 30 packs will contain some fujifilm-03 and a huge quality difference-but same price!.That's why I buy local/on sale media and look for the country they were manufactured in. Look for Made in Japan! Taiyo yuden and hitachi are made in japan.Sony/fuji have some of their media made by ty. Maxell has some of their media made by Hitachi. Search those outer shrink wrappers for the japanese spindles for the best stuff.

I personally prefer Memorex DVD media for all my drink coasters, Frisbees and of course my personal favorite, rear view mirror decorations. :)
But for burning and quality media, I stick with TY 8x in either ? or + format! :)
Happy New Year everyone!!!
