I have a new HP with pentium 4 and lightscribe dvd burner. I downloaded dvddecrypter and dvdshrink. But I kept getting error messages with both programs. I deleted decrypter and downloaded dvdfabdecrypter. Now the error message is saying "Get DVD information fail. 4096". When I try to open disc with DVD Shrink the error message says "DVD Shrink encountered and error and cannnot continue. Failed to read file "E:\". Incorrect function." Is there a setting I need to change to allow the burner to read in these programs. My pc came with Sonic software and I did rip a movie to the hard drive when I first got the computer but couldn't burn it because I didn't have the software. It was deleted. Now when I try to do it again the program locks up. Help!

First of all, uninstall all of the Sonic garbage. It causes nothing but problems.
Are you backing up commercial DVDs? If so, you may need a program like AnyDVD working in the background to overcome some structural copy protection schemes. What DVD is it you're having trouble backing up?
It's also possible it's a mastering error on the disk. Can you read other disks? Does the disk play in the burner? Do you have a regular DVD-ROM drive (not a burner) that you can use for reading?

Thank you for your response.
I am backing up commercial DVD's. I have tried several different ones and had problems with each. Shrek 2, Mickey Mouse-Twice upon a Christmas, The Incredibles are some examples. Those movies will play in the burner. Also once the error occurred, I did go into the file and portions of the movie were in the folder. I do not have an extra drive- the lightscribe burner is the only drive on the pc.
I thought also that I may have to many processes running. I checked the task manager and have approximately 35 programs going. There are some I have been able to end but am not sure what I can end and what is essential. You believe the Sonic program is a part of my problem?

Sonic is a known troublemaker with other programs. That may not be your only problem, but that's probably one of them. You can always reinstall this stuff if you really need it later. Most find other programs that do a much better job and never have to go back. :) You don't have Nero InCD installed do you? That's a troublemaker as well, although the Nero Suite would be my preference for a software package for general CD/DVD stuff (just without InCD). Nero's lightyears ahead of Sonic imo and works well for those of you with lightscribes.
Are you following any of the guides here:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm
Also make sure your DMA is enabled for your Lightscribe and hard drive. Here's a guide by bbmayo for checking and setting:

I don't have any type of Nero software that I know of. I will try to backup my Sonic software and uninstall.
I have not looked at those particular guides you suggested but will take a look.
Thank you so much for your help.

I haven't been able to backup my Sonic software because my lightscribe drive does not detect any of my blank dvd's.
I checked to see if my DMA is enabled and it is. I noticed I have 2 primary and 2 secondary. I uninstalled both and restarted the pc and both appeared again when rebooted.

Have you tried uninstalling your drive from the Device Mgr and letting windows redetect it, sometimes this solves the problem. Also, you will need your Sonic software because this has the program that allows you to create and burn your lightscribe label, unless you have some other labelmaking program for lightscribe.

Thanks for responding. I just uninstalled the drive and rebooted. The drive still does not detect the blank discs I have (Maxell DVD-R,HP DVD+R,Philips dvd+r). I also still see the 2 primary and secondary channels as mentioned above. Should I have 2 sets of each?

Since you have Decrypter go into the open it and go into the Tools tab, then Drive and Capabilities. Check and make sure you have the latest firmware on the burner.
