The RW media does have a harder time playing in stand alones. Booktyping the plus RW's will help.
Here's how I rank them, and I play them in a lot of different drives, off my benqs:
1)Booktyped plus r to dvd-rom
2)Booktyped plus RW
2-tie)Booktyped plus r DL.
3) Dash r's
Haven't tried the dash RW or dash DL media because the plus format is superior for my benqs.
With the cost of RW media vs. R media, usually the r wins out. RW's are great to practice with, maybe keep a movie on it for a while and erase it for another one.I know you can get quality r's for 20 cents each. Rw's,I'm not sure what prices they have for them, but usually around 80 cents to a buck apiece.
You're burner model and # will also factor in. Different Model/Different formats that stand alones favor.Pioneer and NEC seem to favor the dash format.
Those pesky stand alones can do some screwy thing when it comes to reading our backups. What format works on one burner, may not for another burner. I've got 6 pc drives and I know how the Non benqs compare to my 3 benqs. It all comes down to compatability and those stand alone players that you use will tell you which format and type of disc that it will play.
Best to try a few rw's and make sure all your stand alones/game consoles/and pc drives will recognize them before you burn a ton of them.
I started out with a tv home burner using +rw media. Then I found out my apex wouldn't play those +rw tv backups, but did play may plus rw discs from my benq 1620. I had to purchase another stand alone to play those +rw tv recorder backups, but that player played anything I threw at it-regardless of what format R/Rw media. When it had trouble with +r DL,then another el-cheapo player took care of that issue.
