how do you booktype, and what is it? i was reading that it is better to purchase +r media and booktype as dvd-rom, how would i do that. i use clonedvd and anydvd (if that matters)i was looking at newegg.com and found this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817172113 does this seem pretty good. i hope that the link works. how could i tell if newegg sells the made in japan stuff. i was thinking about the supermedia store deal too but that is for 39.00 which is more expensive. overall is +r better than -r? and if so, how would i make it all work to my advantage.

First you need to determine if your dvd burner has the ability to booktype. I have an old LG 4160B that will only booktype +R DLs and that's it. My BenQ 1655 allows me to booktype.
Once you confirmed if you can booktype check out this site for step by step instructions.

That said I've pretty much stuck to -R's (Verbatim/Ritek) and only had an issue with a dvd player I bought in 2000 that I no longer own. But since I bought the BenQ my next batches of media will be +R...

Your burner must be capable of booktyping. Not all burners are. If your burner can booktype, then there is a definite advantage to +R media imo. +R DL media won't play in most standalones without being booktyped as DVD-ROM. If you have a relatively recent Lite-On or BenG burner, both will booktype. If you have an NEC burner, it'll booktype +R DL but you'll need modded firmware for booktyping +R and +RW media. Other manufacturers vary as to capability.

what i have is a memorex 16x dl burner. i will consult the handbook. i know that memorex media sucks, but as for the burner I absolutely love it and have had no problems. is there something to worry about with the burner too since it is memorex. how do i booktype though, is it a step by step process with the burner software that i have to set up or do i do it in CloneDVD somehow?

Some of the Memorex 16s are NEC burners and some are Liteon burners. What is the exact name of the burner displayed by DVD Decrypter? In Decrypter either clicking the NEC or Liteon tab should result in being able to booktype if the firmware allows it. I suspect your burner may be an NEC burner because NEC only puts +R DL bitsetting firmware in their burners. You have to flash with modded firmware for +R and +RW booktype bitsetting. Telling us the exact name of the burner will help in determining who made the burner and the availability of firmware for it.
Once booktyping is enabled in the firmware, any program that supports booktyping will do the booktyping. Either a utility program or a multi-purpose burning program like DVD Decrypter is needed to enable the booktyping initially.

Memorex uses quality suppliers for their burners, but they use a lot of inconsistent suppliers for their media...

No One answered halfhere's question yet, I will. Nero supports booktype setting, CloneDVD 2 does not. However, I use CloneDVD 2 a LOT. I also have the Latest Nero 6 version, 6.6.18. I use DVD+R Media all the time & personally I think that CloneDVD 2 has as good or better playback even when you use Nero & booktype to DVD-ROM. I don't know or care HOW CloneDVD 2 does so good w/out booktype setting to DVD-ROM, but it does! CloneDVD 2 is made by Elby in Switzerland. Those Swiss are very intelligent people! CloneDVD 2 is an amazingly High Quality Back-Up tool! ( With AnyDVD )

Possible dumb question follows, eventually. I have an NEC 3520A burner (about 3 months old). If I understand the booktype process, I can't booktype +R media with this burner unless I use modded firmware - which I don't mind doing. I use AnyDVD/CloneDVD2 almost exclusively and I am very pleased with the results. I can burn both +/- media (always good stuff) and it plays fine on my home player. My player is actually a TV with a built-in dvd player and vcr. My question: is there anything to be gained from me using the modded firware? I know the dvd can be played on a lot more systems if it is booktyped to dvd-rom, but do I need to go ahead and use the modded firmware? Thanks.

Only DVD+R, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW can change the "book type" or "bitsettings" into DVD-ROM format. Nero (both Express and Burning Rom), DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn, K-Probe, Lite-On Book Type Utility (for Lite-On burners) and DVDInfo Pro (I've heard that now it supports book type for certain burners).
I'm a DVD+R person and yes... I prefer DVD+R over DVD-R mainly because I can book type all of them (DVD+R) via Nero Burning Rom and or DVD Decrypter flawlessly into DVD-ROM. And of course, DVD-ROM is the best, perhaps, it's one of the most compatible dvd format at this very moment. With that being said, if your burner can "book type" any of your DVD+R, DVD+R DL or DVD+RW into DVD-ROM, then it will play in any of your standalone dvd players.

Here is the booktype setting in Decrypter. If you go in Mode ISO Write, it pulls up that screen, and the other screen comes up when you click on the book symbol next to the burn speed. Even then, the drop down options are only for +R media as it knows to not even try to booktype DVD-R -RW.
Here is where you can change booktype in Nero Express
and in Nero Burning Rom:
in shrink
in Recode 2
