Hey, kinda in a bit of a mess.

OK new laptop for christmas Acer Aspire 3610

I installed all the latest antivirus stuff on it, using the cd/dvd drive , it then was happy to install updates from microsoft, but now i have the problem of my dvd drive is like not there, i then went to device manager, and it says corrupt drivers (about the 4th time the laptop has booted) i took the decision from the forums else where to update the driver - no results, another was to uninstall the device, reboot and it should auto detect the new hardware, all good i thought, it did just that, auto detected, installed i went to load cd, and no luck, checked my computer and the dvd drive is not there, in device manager it shows corrupt drivers again, the thing is i looked everywhere over the net for these drivers, no where
HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N
thats the DVD drive, if anyone could help me with this problem, i would be greatly pleased, i no its off topic a bit.
I have screenshots that show in better detail. BTW i checked the bios and it shows the DVD drive to be there so therefore must be purely windows errors right.
Thanks
Cameron

Please remove your E-mail addy before you get bombarded with spam, and it's also against forum rules to post it.

As for the current firmware, it appears that there are no updated as of yet. Must be a new enough model that they haven't came out with an update yet. LG doesn't even list it on their site, but here is the link to the 4080n : http://www.lge.com/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&model... . Maybe you could contact their CS and they could help you with an update.

@Ronnie23
A firmware update will not solve your problem, and since it sounds like the burner doesn't even appear in the my computer folder, the OS might not even let you perform one.

You've already tried what I would of done, except for one thing. If your running windows XP (and I'm sure you are), you can perform what's called a "system restore", what this does is restore the OS to an earlier time before your problem occured. To access this feature goto: <start-->all programs-->accessories-->system tools-->system restore> choose restore my computer to an earlier time and pick a date to restore to.

It's not clear exactly after what updates you performed that this happened, so restore the OS to the point before any updates were installed. If the drive reappears after, try installing the updates one at a time checking each time if the drive is still there, this way you can try and catch the bad guy.

If all fails, it's possible that the burner just up and decided to go south on you, you'll need a new one from ACER.
