I am a noob to backing up DVDs but I just made my fist copy using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and AnyDVD. The copy was made on DVD+R media and after checking it in 2 different DVD players (stand alone) it only worked on one. So after researching I found that "book typing" to DVD-ROM will fix that problem but for some reason I can't do that in Decrypter.

Here is the error that I get:

Does anyone have an idea on why this is happening?

Thanks!!!

some burners do not support this. check with the oem to see if u can book type. sometimes there will be a utility that u download from there site that lets u do this.

I tried to do some research on any firmware upgrades or utilities that might help me out but I really couldn't find anything. Does anyone else have any input?

The drive I have is: NEC DVD+RW ND-6100A and its installed in my Dell Inspiron 9100.

I did come across this site which has firmware to add DVD-R/RW support to my drive, would this help?
http://board.iexbeta.com/lofiversion/index.php/t47150.html

Thanks again for any help!

BigD, I'm not aware of any stock bitsetting firmware for that laptop burner. There is modded firmware that removes the RPC and Riploc, i.e., makes the burner region-free and able to read at whatever speed it wants.

I think there is modded firmware for the NEC 6500 that allows for bitsetting. I think there is also a crossflasher that flashes a 6100 to a 6500. So it is a possibility if you want to take the chance. I offer no guarantees that any of this will work and there is always the possibility that something will go wrong during the flashing, leaving your burner a doorstop.

If you're still interested, here are the steps:
1. Go to this site: http://tdb.rpc1.org/
2. Scroll down the page to the NEC 6500 firmware.
3. Click on and doenload the firmware titled 2.22 TDB Windows Flasher.
4. Open the archive. Note the 2.22Fast file is the cross flasher as well according to the ReadMe file.
5. Execute this file. The drive should now be a NEC 6500.
6. Now go to this site: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/
7. Click the NEC 6500 link in the leftmost pane.
8. Download the firmware 224bitset.zip
9. You'll likely need the firmware flasher utility as well. Back in the left pane select NEC Utilities and download the flasher.
10. Expand the firmware archive.
10. Execute the flasher utility.
11. Select the modded downloaded firmware version 224 and flash.

You can then use the NEC utility to enable booktyping if all goes well.

With all of the above said, it could be your problem is due to poor quality media or burn speed. Download DVD Identifier from my sig below and post back the media code of your disk. Good quality media are Verbatim and Made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony media. You'll may just need to find a media your burner burns well and your players like to consume and stick to it. Also burn at 4X or at least no more than 1/2 the rated speed of the media. Burn slower instead of faster usually. Some players are more picky than others.

Also laptop drives are not as good at burning as are full size burners. In the future, I'd buy a lappy with a DVD-ROM or DVD ROM/CD burner and use an external DVD drive. You'll get better bang for the buck. If you're going to do a lot of burning, you might consider getting an external burner now and getting rid of some headaches. Just buy an internal burner (NEC, BenQ, Lite-On, etc.) and put it in an external enclosure (USB, Firewire, or combo). Of course you might find a deal on an external burner ready to go that's even cheaper.

LaddyBoy,

Thank you for the detailed response. I am not going to try flashing my drive because I don't want to take the chance of something getting messed up. Instead I am going to try more quality media and see if that works. If not I will look into purchasing a new drive just for burning (do you suggest a brand or drive that is considered great?).

Also, I downloaded DVD Identifier but it was unable to identify my media as I get this in the log:

[10:35:54] DVD+R/+RW Medium Detected. Starting Identification...
[10:35:54] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 1 (Original ADIP)
[10:35:55] ERROR : ADIP Read M1 Failed : Illegal request - Invalid field in CDB [05/24/00]
[10:35:55] INFO : ADIP Read Method 1 Not Supported ; Method 2 Will Be Attempted
[10:35:55] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 2 (Copy Of ADIP)
[10:35:55] ERROR : ADIP Read M2 Failed : Illegal request - Invalid field in CDB [05/24/00]
[10:35:55] INFO : ADIP Read Method 2 Requires A Written DVD+R/+RW Disc
[10:35:55] Disc Identification Did Not Complete Successfully

The only media I currently have is CompUSA brand DVD+R 4x which I am sure is crap.

Thanks again for all your help!!!

yup, that media is crap, your right. try verbatim, taiyo yuden, fuji, sony, maxell (made in japan, except the verbs, made in taiwan)
second, you need to have said disk in the drive to be able to change the book type..

third, try here for your firmware update..
http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND6100A
and here...
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=14&manufactor=23
scroll down to your your burner, but according to that link, there is no known update.. and the current firmware is 104D (which is what you have)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

@9mmruger1 - thanks for that site. If the better media doesn't work then I am going to flash my drive like that site suggests.

@gear79 - thanks for those links as well. I am hoping the better media fixes my problem.

@Rotary - that dialog box is blanked out because I get an error under the Current Settings (you can see in the pic it says: Unknown(FAILED)! So I can't drop it down to DVD-ROM.

Thanks again everyone!

@BibD65

I just flashed my NEC 3550a with a hacked firmware from liggy and it is great. I got it from the site I gave you. Easy to do.

@ BigD65 & 9mmrugger, according to rpc1, there is no know update for his drive.

also, BigD65, do you have a disk in the drive when you try to change the booktype?

there NEEDS to be a disk in there for the option to drop down..

@gear79 - yes I had the CompUSA brand media in the drive when I went to the drop down.

@9mmruger1 - I just ordered Verbatim media which should get here in a few days. I am going to try and see if the option becomes active with this media. If not I will have to use the firmware hack that you posted above.

Thanks!
