I'm thinking about doing this: DVD Decrypter for ripping in "file mode", Nero Recode main movie only, and Nero Burning ROM out...Because more and more it seems VobBlanker, etc. just aren't worth the time when you mainly want maximum movie quality, and I bet overall, I could get 80-100% quality on most discs using this method after stripping subs, etc. The only ones I'd probably do whole discs of would be TV episode discs as the menu selections would be essential...Any input from people who mostly "re-author" main movie only and its advantages? Thanks...

For me unless its a really awesome movie ie"War of the Worlds" i will usually reauthor to the main movie and if i want a perfect backup of a film i will burn using a Dual Layer Disk, But i will say that i like to xperiment a bit to see what kind of quality disks i can get from time to time............ Dual Layer Burner's rule!!!

@J66:

That is exactly what I do... "Main Movie Only" in Recode2 will generally keep compression in the high 80 - 100% range after removing DTS and unneeded 2 channel audio (I keep 5.1). For movies requiring more compression (75% or lower), I use DVD Rebuilder. And, of course, I use DVD RB with episodic DVDs to keep the menus for direct access to episodes...

I hardly ever watch bonus material, so most of the time I just do the main movie only.

I's say 90% of my backups are main movie only. I'm a perv,so majority of my adult-Riske flicks are entire disc,Gotta keep those extras! DVD Shrink to rip and compress/nero to burn.Sometimes I have to kick in AnyDVD in the background.

Advantages of re-author:

Quicker backup time-Less compression or no compression/ AEC enhancements don't really need to be implemented.Avg 25 min backup time at 4x burn. Record of 17 min backup at 4x!

No menu so no messing around and trying to find the remote which I lost 2 months ago, LOL. It'll auto play as soon as you insert the backup.

Higher quality.Usually very little compression is needed.

The bonus stuff was neat when dvds first came out,but pretty boring for me now.

Dis-Advantages: Loss of Full menu function, really nice on those Adult Riskee movies, LOL

Loose all those bonus features that you like-Out takes/bloopers

Process time. Over an hour-hour and a half backup time using Max smoothness on a 40% compressed backup.12 hrs on my 598 mhz celeron with 256 mbs Rimm! UGGH! Those smaller spec pcs really suffer..

I definitely have to use those AEC enhancements for a better quality picture. Without them,I can see the blockiness in the screen. Not pixellating, just a tinge of square block looking background. Max smooth and max sharp take care of that issue.

So the main difference for me is Backup Process time and what movies have the extra stuff on them that I can't live without! War of the worlds, no bonus stuff, I dream of Jenna-Hell yea! All the bonus crap I can get that has Jenna J in it!

I haven't got any episodic tv shows to backup so I can't help you there.

I select main movie just about all the time, as you can always select chapters through your player and I am not interested in the extras. If I have a long movie I put it on two disks. I will use two disks also if I do keep the extras. One exception on keeping the menues that comes to mind would be Deadwood; the first season.

My programs of choice are:

Shrink, Decrypter and DVDFab Decrypter on some of the newer ones.

I realize most people here are using AnyDVD with great results, but for me I have not had the need as of yet.

AnyDVD in the background and Nero Recode2, main movie, without 2 channel audio or any closed caption and always using Advanced Analysis unless no compression is required.

@saugmon. that's right baby, the only menus worth keeping are those of the porn movies . specially the "comming attractions"LOL.
@j66. i'm with you man. main movie only/deep analysis/ AEC/one english only soundtrack/ kill the credits, is my way to go, for the best quality possible. if still the compression goes over 15%, i use Rebuilder with HC, slowest mode/main movie only. nothing better than this. see you

i almost forgot. Recode2 rules.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

I only do the main movie because I play the majority of my backups in the car. So, it's easier when it goes straight to the movie.

Thanks for the info, guys. And right, Recode 2 rules the roost! I'm running AnyDVD in background, so I think I'll use AnyDVD+Recode 2+Nero Burning ROM(love this also w/the booktyping) for backups...And I would highly recommend for a standalone player w/durability, easy search functions, and 100% compatability: the Sony NS50 player over the Philips 642 any day...

Oh, and before I forget, if you have Recode 2, would there be any reason at all for people to still use DVD Shrink 3.2??
