Since this pertains to media I thought it would be best ro post here. I do apologize in advance if I am wrong.

Anyway have any of you heard/used these DVD/CD skins that basically cover the bottom portion of the media to protect from scratches?

I have an infant daughter that loves to get her hands on DVD's and recently ruined one of her X-mas gifts.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

littlegun- Have seen them in stores but have'nt tried them ! I would think though that like putting a paper label on a dvd could cause problems ( throw the balance off & affect playback ) putting the SKins as they are called on is basically doing the same thing on the read side of the disc minus the sticky adhesive ! That would be my concern ! I would think if theese accesssories worked as advertised the BlockBuster 's & other rental outfits would be using them on every disc ? but they're not are they? Not knocking the Idea ! I would like to know what's up with the skins fron one who has used them too! But I think a better solution for you would be back up your original dvd/cd and let your precious little one play with the copies ! when it gets fubar-ed big time you make another ! a little expensive but less so then buying new movies or albums every time it gets loved beyond playability ! Good Luck - HappY burning!

Big Toxy,

Happy New Yr to you as well and thanks for the fb. To be honest they are a little pricey at 75 cents each at Walmart. I have not opened the pack yet to see what others have said. I have thought about backing up some of my daughters DVD's but again this will be a big time investment as I am guilty of getting her alot of movies. We do alot of roadtrips and like to have a good selection on hand.

Anyway Make it a Great Day!

Hey littlegun - I have a four year old and a two year old and we have many cartoons and children's movies, so I know exactly what you're talking about. I tried some of these "d_skins" I picked up at CompUSA or somewhere. It seemed like a good idea at the time as it said that the media would be readable right through them.

Well, the first few I tried would play back in one of my stand-alone players but not in the kid's player or their grandmother's either, which totally defeated the whole point! Also, although they do snap on rather tightly, those little fingers have a way to get into anything and my kids would constantly "unclick" a few of the little locking tabs that hold it onto the disc, which if inserted into the tray on the player would cause un-readable errors and in a few instances I had major problems even getting the disc with the "loose" skin to eject. Almost ruined my stand-alone player with a non-ejectable disc. Also, once they get dirt, fingerprints, etc. on them, they are actually harder to clean off than if it wasn't on there in the first place!

On the positive side, they are OK if you want to transport the disc somewhere and don't have a case handy. Just pop the skin on to avoid scratching during transport/storage and pop it off before inserting the disc into a player, pop it back when finished.

And if the price of these things is still what it used to be (rather pricey when I bought mine), I would agree with BIGTOXY69 that it would be alot cheaper in the long run to back the discs up on quality media (about .45-.50 apiece) and recopy as needed.

A million thanks for the feedback. I guess they will be going back to Walmart this afternoon. As you mentioned they seemed like an awesome idea but I guess when all is said and done backups is what works best.

Make it a Great Day!

jpc00- YEAH ! if those SKINS are like .75 cents apiece and good blank dvd's are like .30 to .50 cents ea. then it's a know brainer ! I realise what littlegun is saying about the time factor But I think I would rather invest my time in burning backups/safety copies for the kids to play with than to be constantly going to the video store and paying 12.00 to 15.00 dollars on new videos ! and I live in east nowhere so it's a 15 mile trip one way just to go to wallyworld ! so running out to go get a video takes on new meaning ! but our friend littlegun is entitled to choose whatever path works for him ! & I wish him & his family a Happy new year ! Happy Burning Everyone!

BIGTOXY69 - And as far as storing/transporting dvd's, I've heard from someone on this site that you can use makeshift tools and grab empties from video store dumpsters. I can't recall who that was (HaHaHa). Anyway, I have followed that thread and find it quite amusing. I have made a few of those dumpster dives myself without much luck. In fact, I had more luck just by going into the store one Sunday afternoon and asking. The assistant manager said he was just getting ready to trash some and gladly gave them to me as it saved him a cold trip out to the dumpster. I waited until I got home and discovered a whoppoing 78 cases inside the bag, about 10 being the doubles, which I really need! He then told me to check back every Saturday or Sunday and I could have whatever they have on hand. I guess maybe each store is different, but he said that even though they are using the original cases/artwork for new release movies, they would be upgrading the older "blue, white, yellow" ones already on the shelf, plus they still swap out ALL games, meaning a steady supply of recycled game cases for the foreseeable future. I also have bought some of the slim cases from SAMs due to storage size limitations ($25.00/100 Verbatim), and have found great deals on-line at Shop 4 Tech on slim-line double cases ($23.00/100+Free Shipping).
