Hi there, everytime I try to burn a movie using CopyToDvd I keep getting an error message that says Writesector failed followed by error code 06 29 00. Some of the disk are burned half or three quarters of the way through but none will burn 100%. I'm using the same cheap tescos dvd+r's I've always used problem free in the past. CopyToDvd had always worked before. My dvdrw is a philips dvd8631. I can't understand why this has suddenly started happening and it's more than frustrating. I've tried using different progs to write dvds, dvdsanta etc and get similar error messages for all of them. I went to update the firmware (?) for my philips but the site said that their drivers were older than mine so didn't bother. I've also tried uninstalling and then re-installing CopyToDvd with no success. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be most appreciated. Thanks.

This could be a media problem, use good quality media such as Verbatim or Taiyo yuden. Most problems are caused by using poor media quality such as Memorex.
Copy to DVD is a pretty good prog. especially when used with DivxToDVD

Do you think that's the likely cause even though I have had absolutely no problems with this media in the past? If so any suggestions of why it's suddenly staretd acting up?

What type of media are you using??
Memorex are known to use low quality dye in their process, some times you can be lucky and get a good spindle others just fail all the time, they are too inconsistent and cause headaches for most people here at AD who have used them.

Are you USING Memorex???????

@favery, it may not be your Discs if you are burning at a slow speed and haven?t had problems till now.

Some of the new RipGuard protections are doing this. What is the Movie you?re trying to Back-up?
It may need a little help from another decrypter than what you are using? What are you using?

@ Favery

C'mon man... Tescos dvd-r's? You can't be that tight!

If you're stuck and you HAVE to buy at Tescos, have sense... Get RW's... They're CMC stuff, the worst maker ever! Get you arse down Maplin's and get some Verbatim 8x...

Or try using different software: DVD Decrypter, Nero, Clone DVD 2 & AnyDVD (perfect couple)... Any of them will be a lot better than CopyToDVD...

;)

@2oldgeek, before you're too quick to criticise then make sure YOU have your facts correct, if you read it the guy has tried different progs and the problem persists

@permiggs, I thought these discs were made by cmag, the SAME AS MEMOREX, thank you for your confirmation!!

@favery, need I say more, more than likely POOR QUALITY discs.

The facts are, if haven't had problems in the past, then look for another problem before investing in more discs. Don't dissasemble the computer before checking the on/off switch..
Then, BUY BETTER DISCS!

@2oldgeek,if you know anything about Memorex or any cmc made discs you will surely know that no matter how long you have been using them sucessfully then you can consider yourself LUCKY.

At any time, at any place in a spindle of these discs the BAD ones are learking, getting closer with each disc used. Why would't I suggest it be a media problem.

You have your thoughts and I mine, DONT take me to task again nor answer in a way you did.

I do NOT appreciate rudeness in any form.

How about answering these questions for all of us here that are willing to help you:

First, what is the MEDIA CODE of the disks you are using? (I am not asking for the Maker based on the outside of your packaging, I am asking for the actual MEDIA CODE on the disk itself.)

Second, what is the movie that you are having problems with currently?

Third, what is your FREE space currently on your HDD?

Fourth, what is your current firmware version for your DVD writer?

Let?s try these first before I ask a couple more? Let us know.

Sorry, haven't been well lately and not getting online much, I'd just like to say I appreciate everyone taking the time to try and help me sort this out. Also, not that I mind, but could everyone stop referring to me as a guy? Decidedly female, at least last time I checked. As to the questions..

First, what is the MEDIA CODE of the disks you are using? (I am not asking for the Maker based on the outside of your packaging, I am asking for the actual MEDIA CODE on the disk itself.)

Not to seem totally ignorant but fairl new to this and not terribly technically minded, where can I find the media code?

Second, what is the movie that you are having problems with currently?

It's not actually a movie, it's the second series of Xena (no laughter please)

Third, what is your FREE space currently on your HDD?

How do I find that out (told you I was new to this and really terribly untechnical, many apologies for the ignorance!!)

Fourth, what is your current firmware version for your DVD writer?

Again, huh?!

More than happy to supply any info, as long as people can be real specific about where to find it. Everything I know about burning dvd's has been learned hit and miss and from sites like this with no real deeper understanding of what I'm doing. This is a valuable learnign experience for me and I really do appreciate the help. Forgive any slow replies. Thank you.

Hi Favery.

Sorry for calling you a guy... (embarassed) ;)

The media code is the DVD's finger prints. Get DVD identifier here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

Run a scan on one of your discs and post the results here so we can have a look.

Xena, yeah? Ok...

To find out how much space you have on your HDD, double-click on 'My Computer' and right-click on your hard disk drive (normally C:), choose 'properties' at the bottom. You should have now the information on the HDD space.

To check the firmware of your burner, right-click on 'My Computer'. Then, choose 'Properties', go on to 'Hardware'. Then click on the 'Device Manager'. Go on 'DVD/CD ROM drives', right click on your burner, then choose 'Details'. Choose 'Device instance ID'. It should tell you there what firmware you have on your burner.

If you get stuck just come back and one of us will help you.

Miggs.

Ok, I hope this is the right thing, I d/l Dvd Identifier and this is what I got.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:AML-002-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [Anwell Precision Technology]
Manufacturer ID : [AML]
Media Type ID : [002]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V4.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free space on my hard drive is 134GB vs 94.4 used space. And as for firmware when I followed your instructions I got this, IDE|CDROMPHILIPS_DVD+RW_DVD8631_____________________CD21________|594D583030393931303735313539423335305644

I hope that's what you were looking for. I've taken everyones advice and bought some different disks, Sony ones, and they're working absolutely fine, but I'd still like to get to the bottom of why the others have suddenly stopped working after having had no problems in the past. And seriously, thanks for the help, it's much appreciated, often times looking at sites like this it's off putting to post as no-one really wants to deal with harsh cries of NOOB and various less pleasant terms. But everyone here has been great. Thanks.

Newer firmware is available for your drive which shows as a rebadged BenQ1620, a very good drive. The link is below.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/Gd30.zip

AML-002-000 ??? This can be your biggest problem... the media. I can only say that I have never heard of it before.

Just because it was good before, doesn't mean a newer batch or even disks sitting for months cannot go bad as well. Before you jump through a bunch of hoops, try getting some Great Quality disks and see what happens.

Look what i found mate:

Have a look. ;)

Hello Favery... How are you doing girl?

Yea, definetely media problem, dodgy batch? Maybe, but your firmware needs updating anyway, Scuba beat me to that link (LOL). According to that list (link above), your DVD's are Bulkpaq DVD+R 4x (AML-002-000).
Obviously the label on the box when you buy them is different... To be honest i never heard of them...

Good luck, and don't be a stranger, pop around if you get stuck with 'all sorts'... There's always people here ready to help.

Miggs.
