hi, I'm new to this forum... I started backuping movies and ps2 games days ago, and the dvd backup mainstream goes for dvdshrink... I researched before hearing this consensus, and installed clonedvd, the first backup program I found... now tell me, what's the major difference between them, if I can remove audio and subtitles on both? what makes dvdshrink the best backup program? I tried to use it once and it crashed...

sorry for off-topic, but my 2nd disc on my movies is not going straight, it's not playing at all on standard dvd... it jumps all chapters and movie ends... blargh...

Yes, in both. Shrink is free but no longer updated. CloneDVD 2 is retail and for my purposes, the best at what it does when coupled with AnyDVD, both atainable from Slysoft.com. These two programs are all that I currently use for DVD backups.

AnyDVD decrypts and removes the region settings. CloneDVD 2 shrinks, recodes and burns to DVD (or copies to HD if you prefer.

to answer your question more directly DVD Shrink and CloneDVD are somewhat the same, as in they both can copy and shrink movies, however DVD Shrink also breaks encryptions where as CloneDVD does not break any encryptions. also DVD Shrink is a free prg., where as clondvd costs money.

However, DVD Shrinks fails with the newer encryptions, since it's no longer updated.

All excellent points and all correct. With AnyDVD (slysoft product) you have the choice to use whatever program suits your fancy. I have all of them. CloneDVD2, DVDdecrypter, DVDShrink, imgburn, DVDFabdecrypter, and AnyDVD. This gives me a world of choices for backup.

All are great for the job intended.

Just my .02

Cheers.

The answer is yes, but I would still keep those two around as they should be an irreplacable part of anyone's arsenal.

True statement but, with AnyDVD running behind it, it should act like there is no protection there. So you only have to purchase one program.

As 9mmruger stated, if you have them all you should never be at a disadvantage.

@LOCOENG

Good point, but I also still have 321, but that doesn't mean I'll try to use it since there are more "up-to-date" programs available....:-)

well, i also have all the heavy hitters, shrink, clonedvd2, DVD2One v2, and my favorite lately, Nero recode2. of course when there is too much compression to deal with, i use the best for less, Rebuilder pro with HC.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

I don't feel that DVD Shrink is really outdated. I have Nero Recode 2 which was developed by the same fella, but I don't use it as much as Shrink. I just don't get that warm fuzzy feeling with it like I do Shrink.

at this point in time, recode2 and shrink output the same quality(great one for a transcoder)i use recode2 more because it is faster than shrink, that's all but, i do use them both.

p:s: if it wasn't because it takes my little computer anywhere from 4 to 6 hours to encode a movie, i would only use dvdRebuilder/HC, i have use a few times and i can't tell you all that there is hardly anything better.
