First off I apologize if this is not allowed to be discussed as I am new to this forum. I hope its not but I understand if it is. I treid searching for the answer but got tired of looking at countless ammounts of threads with nothing inregards to my problem. So here it is:

Ive backed up several DVDs I own for the fact that I take them to work with me often and have scratched several to the point where im afraid they will stop playing soon. The backups work fine on my portable DVD player, our house player and my computer, but when I try to play one in my PS2 it comes up with disc read error. At first I thought it was cause the PS2 was vertical so I tried laying it flat which helped it read it, but it still ended up not working. Sometimes it will play like 1-2 mins and then do this. I have no idea if its the media im using or what. I use Verbatim DVD-R. Could the media be the problem? Is it the burns on the discs arent deep enough for the laser to read or is the laser dirty perhaps? Is it something else with the PS2 thats causing them not to be read? Any info would be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks
Big John

Hi BigJohn82,
A couple of things...

First PS2s are poor (and at the time I bought mine, expensive) DVD players. Mine did exactly what yours is doing. Get a cheap DVD player instead.

If you really need to use the PS-2 you should try using +R media and booktyping it to DVD-ROM. Those will play correctly. (Mine did)

You need to have a DVD burner capable of booktyping. About the easest way to check is to look at the Backup DVD settings in Shrink. Under the Burn Settings tab see if the "Book type DVD-ROM" box is greyed out or not. If not greyed out then you can, if you have +R media.

Verbatim is good media, try their +R even if you can't booktype it.

I had probs with my ps2 also, i agree with the above post about booktyping DVD+R's i do it on all of my backups. I also adjusted the lens on my ps2 to where i never have disc read errors anymore. If you have a older ps2 here is a great guide to go by.

hope it helps

Thanks for the replies guys. I will definitly pick up a small pack of +Rs to try to see if they work instead of the -Rs. Too bad I just bought a 50pack of -Rs though. I have a portable DVD player I will be playing the copies on at work, and a regular DVD player at home to play them on, however my friend will be getting a burner which is why we tested them on the PS2 to see if theyd work because thats what he wants his copies to play on. Also, my PS2 is like 3-4years old if thats old enough to consider it an older model.

The book-type dvd-rom IS checked BUT grayed out, so I guess I cant do that then. Atleast thats what I think reading your reply. If thats the case, im suprised this burner is not capable of it as its a LiteOn Dual Layer 16x Burner. Let me know if you think +R will work still or not because I dont want to waste money/time trying.

Thanks
Big John

Hi again,

A bit about booktyping...

For a DVD player or drive to identify what kind of disc is loaded, it reads the "Book Type Field" found in the lead-in section of each DVD disc. These few bits, commonly referred to as "compatibility bitsettings" tell the drive which low-level format specification the media conforms to, such as DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R or DVD+RW. DVD players are required by the "DVD Specification" to play the -R formats and DVD ROM but almost always do a better job at recognizing DVD-ROM. There really is not much difference in the way these look file wise. Booktyping adds these "compatability bits" to your +R DVD. The default for players is to play DVD-ROM so some, including the PS2 do better with these, rather than DVD-Video.

Lots of burners do not have this option. My Pioneers don't. I think BenQs do but that is something you could check. I'd try the +R without booktyping and see if that works.

BTW, Welcome to Afterdawn!

FasFrank:

Thanks for letting me know a bit more about book-typing. I think I understand it for the most part, but am unclear as to whether I can get +R discs and burn copies that will work on the PS2. If you could just clarify that, based on my response of the Book-Type being checked but greyed out, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Hehe, you are replying faster than I'm editing my previous messages.

Try the +R and see if that helps. Also if I remember that long ago I think I changed media. I had been using Memorex but switched to Maxell which seemed to work better. Memorex should be avoided! I use Taiyo Yuden now which I consider to be the best available.

I cannot tell you for sure if this will work or not. You will have to experiment a bit. Like I said those PS2s are(were?) great for gaming but not for watching movies. I like Bigfatboy's ideas about adjusting the thing. I have not gone to the link he provided though.

Frank

Edit:
That is a cool article! Thanx Bfb!

Since you have a lite on burner, then all you need is lite on's booktype utility

get the utility here - http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm

BFB:

Thanks for the link, will go check it out and get the utility right now. I went to bestbuy in hopes of getting just a small pack of like 5 Verbatim +Rs for like 8 bucks but the only ones they had were 15 for 10 and I didnt wanna spend that much on that little. So I ended up getting FujiFilm DVD+Rs 50pack for 14.99. They said if they dont work good that if I bring back all discs including used ones I can return them within 30 days. So I will see if these work or not.

Thanks
Big John

Ok ran the utility and changed the book type to dvd-rom and burned a copy of one of my movies. When it was done I checked it in the utility to make sure it came out as a dvd-rom type disc and it did, however the PS2 would not read it. So obviously it didnt work, and its not going to unless its just the FujiFilm brand. Oh well, gonna take back these discs tomorrow and get my money back. Thanks for the help.

Ok. I did some searching online and found out how to go into the version options on the PS2 and change the diagnostic to on to adjust the laser. Doing this resulted in the Verbatim-R to work better then before, but it froze up at the menu screen after hitting the play option. We then tried the Fuji+R and it didnt work at all. Im wondering if maybe I need to get a laser cleaner disc and run that in my PS2 since ive had it for like 4 years, maybe longer, and have never cleaned it once. Let me know if you think that might help. Im still returning the discs to Bestbuy tomorrow since they dont work.

Thanks

So I returned the DVD+Rs since they didnt work even after booktyping them. I then tested the DVD-R copies on my friends PS2 which is newer, mine is like 30001 and his is like 39001 or something like that, and they worked fine. I then tried a PS1 disc on mine, wtih the black back, and it read it but had a tiny bit of trouble. I have narrowed the problem down to my PS2 not being able to read discs with colored backs very well, and the DVD-Rs at all. I was wondering if theres any DVD-Rs that would have a silver back, or are they all colored? Let me know.

Thanks
Big John

PS, I also tried using a can of air and blowing out the PS2 a little with the rom open and it had no effect. I guess maybe I could take it apart and blow it out too, but I dont think thats going to do any good.
