hi, i have been using shrink for over a year and probably have burnt at least a few hundred dvds. for the last few days, however, i have burnt nothing but coasters. all the files i burn are dvds ripped with dvd decrypter or dvdfab decrypter. i have a sony vaio laptop with factory burner. the dvd always burns to 99 or 100 percent then shows an error. here is the error message:

Hey hoppy91
There are three things I see from your log that you should do.
1. update your drives firmware, your current version is 1.5b the most recent update is 1.5g.
get it here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

2. your version of nero is out of date, the current version is 6.6.0.
18, download and install update packages 1 and 2.
get it here:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

3. use shrink to reduce the size ot he output file/s to a custom size of 4300, since your getting close to completing the burn possibly too close to the outer edge of the DVD. Your file size is 4489mb and the burn process fails at 4478mb, so decreasing the file size to 4300mb should help.

Burn your DVDs at 4x speed, but not greater than 8X.

try to not write any further than 4300MB. In Shrink to to Edit>Preferences>under first tab>scroll down until you get to "custom">in box beside it type in 4300.

Ritek has been a problem for some burners, tyr something like taiyo yuden or verbatim. sony fuji and maxell are fine if they are made in japan.

Ritek have been of questionable quality as of late. Maybe try another brand such as Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan)

Another media issue, your burner doesn't like those disks. A firmware upgrade could possibly be the solution.

thanks for the quick replies, i will try your suggestions, the discs i have been using are maxells, i dont why it says ritek in the error message. . i am just wondering why now?, i just went through a spindle of 100 discs of these maxells with no problems usually while multitasking. all the coasters i have just made have been from the new spindle. is it possible to get a bad batch? also, i installed printer software the other day for a hp printer. thats about the only thing that has changed on my system. once again, thanks for the help. i will report back with results after i try all your suggestions.

hoppy, I do not think that it is a bad batch. I believe those riteks are pure crap, just my personal experience though. I am reburning a spindle of 50 of those disks cause, again in my case, actually burn pretty good but deteriorate very quickly. Some in less then 2 months. Found disks burned less then a year ago that read 0 in quality tests.

@hoppy

Maxell is the brand that buys their discs from Ritek. Maxell is a very good brand in fact its ALL I use, but only the +R flavored discs that are made in Japan...they are made by Hitachi and are high grade media. Some other good media to be considered would include Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony, Fuji (made in Japan).

Its kinda like an Infinity is a Nissan and a Lexus is a Toyota.

i took all the advice offered here, updated my firmware and Nero and pinched the output back on shrink to 4300 mb. that seemed to do the trick. i have been increasing that amount since and have been able to successfully burn at 4400 mb but no higher. and that is using gold maxell dvd-r's bought from bestbuy. i thought i would try my usual brand - white sony dvd-r's from walmart. no problem whatsoever with the sony's at whatever the size of burn, i guess i will stick with those, too bad i bought 200 maxells. thanks again for solving my problem, i was almost about to order a new burner.
