Don't think your printer will do it. You'll need an epson r series or if outside the US a canon pixma.
Then there's always getting a lightscribe burner that 'burns' the image in discs made esp. for this.

It's an epson -the r series - the have like 5 models varying in price.
Finding a good deal - can't help on that one - I've had an r320 for over a year so I haven't been in the market for a new one. Does do a great job!

If you're looking to spend from somewhere like $100 or $129, then I recommend the R300 or R320 (after rebate, it'll probably be like $79 or $89 only). On the other hand, I've heard that the Cannon I400 or something similar is good, but it cost too much, in my opinion. However, the choice is yours.

Can you tell the differences? *NOTE: I custom made this one for my son.
Here is one of my most trusted media, the 8X DVD+R printable Maxell (mij by Hitachi). Looks pretty sweet to me.
And now, here is one of the original.

OK, I bought the R320 as an Xmas gift for my wife, & something like the following conversation occured:
She: "Wow! I love it. I can print pictures from home w/o waiting" "Cheap 8x10's..." "You're the best..." Blah Blah Blah...
Me (One hour later while hooking it up): "WOW! It looks like this thing can print on DVDs somehow as well... *wink* *wink*
She: "Huh, that's nice dear."
So, not only did I get my iPod, I ended up with an R320 too! Merry Christmas to me!
Anyway, what is a good media to use with R320? I would assume that full hub printable is better that otherwise. I only use TY's, so which would be better: the matte or shiny? It looks like Supermedia store has these for $0.50 +/- a disk. Any better deals that anyone knows of? Depending which type of disks to get, should I spray them with clear coat? From the hardware store?
Thanks for all the good advise to date :)

The shiny ones you may be taking about are thermal printable so you can't use the epson for that. All of ty's printable are matte. They have the white and silver inkjet. I buy all the majority of printable ones from supermediastore.com - the prices are about the same as rima and they both seem to always have the same sales. Think rima has cheaper shipping.
It depends on the original if I use hub or non hub printable. The silver inkjet have a 3-d like effect and look pretty cool. They only come in non hub printable that I've found.
I don't use a spray - the ones I printed over a 1 year ago still look good.

Thanks guys.
@Binkie7 - I'm glad to hear the disks that you printed look good, but would spraying them with clear coat(?) increase durability? I have a two year old & 9 mo. old - the reason I do this in the first place. Silver matte sounds good - is there anywhere, though, that shows the real world differences between printing on different types?

Clear coating would make them more durable for the little ones. So in your case yep I'd do it too. Let me scan a silver one and white one sometime tonite or tomorrow and I'll post the pics.

Well the silver inkjet didn't scan very well - my scanner doesn't handle the 'holographic' look very well so you can't really go by this pic.
I think you would like the silver inkjet one's though - others members here also like the way they turn out.
This is the silver inkjet one - real world it looks alot better.

@Binkie
What program are you using for that job?
So far all i used was 'Sharpie', never really minded the printing... Might try a couple just to see the result. I think i have some old printables somewhere...

I just scan the original and print to the disc using the 'print cd' software that came with the epson printer. To easy - though this pics aren't that great they really do look good.

Nero comes with that Easy CD Creator. I use it to print my DVD/PS2 covers, there's an option there to do a disk shape print, can you do it on a DVD or is it only for labels? I know it sounds like a dumb question, but the resolution has got to be different between the two prints...

Here is one of my old 8X DVD+R Silver Inkjet Taiyo Yuden with "3D holographic effects". I could only hope YUDEN would bring the hub printable silver inkjet to the market soon, man that would be ten times awesome.

You could probably use Nero's but you would need to get the alignment correct. Print CD came with the Epson printer and it's too easy so I'm sticking with that. You printer just need to have the dvd/cd print feature - most don't.
@alkohol
Yeah I wish they would too. If you ever find any let me know.

How did you add your own personal text to the disc?
