Discovered over the holidays that the DVD of my son's school play was starting to freeze. The disc has only been played a handful of times and looks immaculate. My immediate thought was that this was crap media and I ought to try to save this asap. Shrink encountered a read-failure but I managed to get the files off with DVD Decrypter. When I id'd the disk it was RITEKG05, which surprised me. I must admit I've never used these before but thought they were pretty good. Luckily I now have the thing copied onto TY. Anybody experienced the same with these disks ?

I experienced that problem because I burned too slow. It's odd,but some of this quality media, combined with quality burners, has more errors on them during slow burning. That's my only issues from my backups. Some of my 2.4x burns have too many read errors to be re-ripped. Luckily I only did a few on those Mcc-004 16x verbs.

If you have any more issues with that stand alone using the ty media, then it'll probably be that players fault.Keep a close eye on that playback. Stand alones tend to get weaker over time, making backup discs harder to read.

Which part of the play backup did it start freezing? Beginning/middle/end?

What's the brand name and model# of that DVD-RW drive?

It froze at the beginning. I don't know the burner in question since this was a commercially produced disc. Fortunately some of my friends will have bought this disc too so it will be interesting to see if they start to have similar problems. The TY copy I made plays perfectly in the standalone which exhibited the original freeze.

Hi ricster,
I believe those riteks are pure crap, just my personal experience though. I am reburning a spindle of 50 of those disks cause, again in my case, actually burn pretty good but deteriorate very quickly. Some in less then 2 months. Found disks burned less then a year ago that read 0 in quality tests.

I don't mess with the dash format anymore, but the ritek R-03 are sweet.I've got a few maxell ritek G-04s that are still holding strong after a year.I've got some Maxell Ritek G-05s gold tops around somewhere about 8 months old. I'll have to check them out.

The only issues at the beginning, after ruling out drive problems, was on some of the columbia picture encryptions. Something about the lady liberty icon in those pictures messed up a few of my backups. Cutting out lady liberty took care of that issue. I do that from now on with those columbia releases.

All I use are the -ritek Go5 and I've burned around 450 movies with a Sony 4x burner and I don't have any issues with them as far as play back or deterioration

welcome to MY boat, i got 500+ burned on Ridata Ritek G05s and i've had them for over 2 years...mine haven't deteriorated either...

everyone has their own unique experiences with media, i for one, have been very pleased with the final product of RitekG05s and their longevity thus far...

perhaps i got 5 good batches at the time of purchase? maybe... supermediastore has YET to let me down in the last few years...

The only deterioration I've had is with the G04 and G05 printable discs. The +R and the non printable discs seem to hold up much better. Unfortunately, I have several hundred that are burned on Ritek G04 and G05 printable discs. I am slowly transferring them to TY and Verbatim when I can. Some are beyond that.
