I made alot of coasters too when I started. You came to the right place for help.

What programs/software are you using? That will help. Media type was a big issue when I was making Beer coasters. Cheaper it was the more I went through.

I am still really new myself but will try and give you a hand.

Learning more but still leaning on a Newbie status! :)

If they play fine on you PC then you haven't made coasters, it sounds like an incompatibliity issue with your stand alone DVD player and the media it's trying to play.

Is the DVD player capable of recognizing and playing DVD+/-Rs or RWs? You should read the maunal to find out.

If it's not compatible with your media then you have two choices:
1. Upgrade your player to a newer sytle capable of multi-format playback.

2. You could try booktyping if your recorder supports it(works only with DVD+R media). Bascially you're fooling the player into recognizing the DVD as a DVD-ROM.

Try using Verbatim DVDs instead (any media made in japan is considered good quality), burn at 4X. Use only media that the player is designed to recognize and playback if not booktyping.

I know some players have a sticker or print on the front that shows what it plays. At least one of mine does. It does say +/- w/ the DVD Logo. I would go Johnl123 advise.

Yes.
Using shrink, rip the DVD to your hard drive to a VIDEO_TS folder (the folder must contain .ifo, .VOB, .bup files), use the re-author selection and backup the main movie only (Title 1) or you'll get audio sync problems.

Get a free app called DVDx v2.3 here:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVDx

This little application will take those files and convert them to a VCD format (MPEG1). I've done this many times (you'll need 2 CD-Rs per movie) and the VCDs always play well on my pc, but never tried to play them in a stand alone player.

Below is a site that if you input the Name and Model # of the Players it will tell you what blank media others are using in that Player and if they are having problems.

If you want to make exact copy of the DVD movie then you use DVDDecrypter in .iso read and then Iso write that image to a D/L DVD

@aggrevated

As touched on briefly by Johnl123, we could try the booktype route...give us the make and model# of your DVD burner as well as the firmware version. This can be found by using DVD Decrypter, go to Tools, Drive, Capabilities...The top line will give you all of this information.

Booktyping will more than likely correct your issue. Here are a couple of threads related to it that will give you and idea about what we are talking about if you are not sure.

Hope this helps you out.

As you said at least they are capable of being played. Be very wary of Maxell, I have burned alot of "True" coasters with them

I am now a verbatim for life person......

If in fact your DVD player does not play DVDr's you can pick up a new DVD player for pennies now-adays.....
