hi there!

i`m a complete newbie but i hope you will help me anyway...

i tried to make a backup copy from one of my dvds, i use a lg GSA 4166 DVD burner.

when i start DVDShrink, i click on "open disc", select the dvd`s video folder and then it starts scanning. but somewhere in the process, dvdshrink just stops and i get an error message:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and can not continue

failed to read file G:\ (that`s my DVD drive letter)

Unzulässige Funktion (that`s German, sorry i don`t know how to translate that)

I tried other programs like CloneDVD, DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD is running in the background. AnyDVDs info on the disc is:

Summary for drive G: (AnyDVD 5.7.3.1)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 0

Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)

Video DVD (or CD) label: HOOLIGANS
Media is not CSS protected.
Video Standard: PAL
Media is locked to region(s): 2!

RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Structural copy protection not found.
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 2!

does anybody know what the source of my problem is? i assume that it`s a copy protection, because the DVD is brand-new (bought it only yesterday) and the reading error appears at different times each time i try. but then again, i got AnyDVD running and its said to remove any copy protection, at least that`s what i paid the money for...

any help would really be appreciated!

yes the disc is in the drive. i have the same problem with CloneDVD, it scans the dvd but at a certain point it stops with an error message that i should clean the disc. but it`s clean, no fingerprints, nothing :(

I wonder if your drive is getting hot and stopping. Drive failure possibly?

the drive does get hot indeed. but i only have that problem when trying to rip a dvd, playing dvds or burning works fine...

i just found out that i have the same problem with obviously not copy protected dvds :(

maybe it`s really a problem with my drive but it`s a new one and i didn`t find new firmware on the internet. does anyone know if there`s a way to fix that?

sounds like it may just be a problem with either your drive or the disks themselves......have you tried other movies and get the same errors?

You can check for a firmware update here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

Fortunately for you drives are not very expensive for a good one. You can get a replacement for under $50.00 for a decent drive. I just picked up a NEC 3550a for $46.00 shipped to my door.

I don't know a lot about this stuff, but I am going to take a guess that the problem is because your DVD Drive is region 0 (region free), and the dvd you are trying to play is region-2. If you try to play the dvd in Windows media player (or whatever software dvd-player you have) does it work? I'm going to guess no.

If that's the case, you can change your region code to 2, but be careful because you can only do this 5 times and you will NEVER BE ABLE TO CHANGE IT AGAIN. Of course, you can get hacked fireware which will allow changes an unlimited number of times, but if you're only watching region-2 movies, this probably won't be necessary.

TO CHANGE THE DVD-DRIVE'S REGION CODE:
You can change the dvd drive's region by right-clicking the dvd drive in My Computer, then going to properties. From there, click the hardware tab, select your dvd-drive again and click properties. Select the DVD Region tab, and chose your country. Just be sure that it says "Region 2" in the "New Region" box. There is probably a better way to change the drive's region, but I don't know about it yet. I also just got a burner a few days ago.

thanks for the answer but i don`t think the region code is the problem. i can still play the DVD with PowerDVD and region code 0 should play all other region codes, actually. at least, that`s what AnyDVD said.

i guess i`ll just try and format my system. i don`t think it`s a problem with the recorder, because it`s brand-new and LG GSA-4166B is said to be a really good one, that`s why i bought it.

Well the only reason I say this is because when I first got my dvd-burner, it was set to region 0, and SmartRipper (nor Windows Media Player) would not read the copy-protected movie. Then when I launched the dvd-player software that came bundled with the drive, it asked me what region I wanted to set the drive to, and from that point on I have been able to rip movies no problem.
