First, many thanks to everyone offering assistance on this site. With this board's help, I've learned how to successfully backup my favorite movies. I've also transferred my home videos to DVDs. In doing these projects, I've used your advice and used good media, i.e., TY and Ricoh. My question is - how many years can I expect the backup DVDs to last?

Nobody really knows! Roughly speaking, they are 2 pieces of plastic, with a layer of dye/film(?), between them. How well will the 2 layers hold? how long will the dye last, will the dye degenerate? Not enough time has past yet to obtain reliable figures.
This article may be of interest, good illustration in the lower portion;

It also depends on how the discs are stored i.e. in cases, away from heat, and finally how are they handled.

you old fart you !!
i have read that they will outlast your lifetime, and others i have read a few decades. as long as you use trusted media, you should be fine.
also, simple steps like buring with a quality burner, 4x or less (but some do @ higher speeds, but using top of the line burners, trusted media, and years of experience).
you should get its/your life worth of good playable media..

@ bhetrik......
4x on burn speeds is the most common speed you'll find that members burn at. just cuz your media may say 16x capable, you have to factor in pc specs, burner, programs.
4x is safe, trusted, and the norm of most.

That's what I was getting at. I burn movies at 4x and ps2 games at 1x and use ty media for both. I know that's what alot of others use, also. It's just that your post said no less than 4x.
And as for the original post, the life span will also vary GREATLY with the brand of media you use. I've been backing up for 4 yrs now and in the beginning fell victim to CMC media. 97% of discs were unplayable after a few weeks.
