@ ppills... man your batting 1000 today !!
Quote:
I still have some Philips DVDs that were purchased about 2 years ago

and they still play fine in my DVP642 to this day.
that player was not available 2 years ago... data was, but not that phillips player..

Quote:
Ok I found a v3.04 firmware that actually worked.
guess you opened that link i gave you, instead of telling me there was no update.
Quote:
At least there wasn't any jitters
what do you think the pink/purple line are??

yeah, your scan drops off at the end cuz all memorex disks do that... always crappy readings towards the end..
you'll find that members in here would say anything below 90 is no good and will only get worse, especially those CMC MAGS..
hence your score of a 1 on that scan.

btw, drop your scan speed to 4x..

Here's the results from my Verbatim Digital Movie DVD+R's, identified as Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., which according to digitalFAQ.com, is 1st class media. And oh yeah, I payed $8.99 for a 5-pack about a year ago or so...

WTF IS WITH THE DROP AT THE END?

Up next: My "Memorsux" PRODISCS. woohoo! This is fun!

@gear79

1. My memory is pretty damn bad obviously. lol.
2. I can safely say I played these disc at my friend's house with his DVP642 ABOUT a year ago. I recently got my player just a couple of weeks ago.
3. I did open the link you linked to, that's the firmware I initially downloaded; It didn't work; Found a working firmware elsewhere.
4. I'll do a re-scan with lower speeds soon.

Now, here's a scan for my Memorex DVD+R's identified as RITEK R03, payed $21.99 w/shipping for a 50-pack. These are from my first batch I had purchased, my newest batch is PRODISC or whatever - I'll do that scan later.
This one is a DVD-VIDEO (not data):

1.2 million PI ERRORS! COOL! :\

I'll do my other Memorex batch next.

All right now, here's my Memorex - PRODISC batch:

Well, would you look at that? Not as bad as the RITEK batch, and a pretty good score of 97. Still 500,000 PI Errors.

Can someone tell me what exactly PI Errors and PI Failures mean? Does it have to do anything with my trust-worthy NEC burner AT ALL? I'm pretty sure it has been taken good care of it. Or is it strictly because of the media used? My numbers seem so high.

Anyway, next is a re-scan of my CMC media with a reduced speed. Let's see if it makes a difference.

Ok here's a comparison of the crappy Philips CMC media at different scan speeds, using the same exact disc.

initial 8x scan:

4x scan:

Hmm, well dropping the scan speed obviously made a pretty big difference. Not a whole lotta red in the slower scan, and a lot lower numbers.

I'm glad I didn't purchase these :) , got these from a friend for free.

I wonder if I do a second scan at the same speed with the same disc will I get the same results?

Now, this next scan should be pretty damn bad. Doing it just for kicks. Some crappy AVB brand media and I don't even know what the hell kind of media it is. lol. I burned some data discs and they aren't even read by my drive more than half the time.

Taiyo Yuden it says? What the crap? I had a tough time getting my DVD drive to read these! These were a very cheap price, brand was AVB, and price was less than 20 bucks for a 50-pack. The top of the DVD was a shiny, not very marker friendly material. Would not buy these ever again!

Well, I don't really know what to say about this media other than it is extreme crap and I would never buy them again. I even got an error after this scan was complete. I have no clue what it means.

Can someone link me directly to the good stuff from TY from that mediastore.com website?

Those TY coded discs are most likely fakes. I'm a verb man and prefer them over even TY's but you can find verbatim's made by MCC and genuine TY's at supermediastore.com, rima.com, meritline.com, or newegg.com.

I think I will when I run out of these prodiscs. Wait. I KNOW I will purchase those next. 17.99 isn't bad at all and is actually how much these costed without shipping included.

How is the front of the DVD by the way? Hologram looking? Are they sharpie-friendly?

every single "regular" Taiyo Yuden i have (not including my inkjet printables) are ALL Sharpie-marked~ :)

don't matter if it's shiny silver, matte, silver lacquer, etc...Sharpies will NOT harm Taiyo Yudens when written on top~ :)

if you want a REAL "holographic" effect, consider the silver inkjet printables...now THOSE are really sweet looking after using my Epson to print on em'...i actually prefer them over the white inkjet printables, the only drawback is that the silver inkjet printables ARE NOT HUB printable...and the white inkjet printables ARE HUB printables..

it depends on what YOU prefer...everyone has their own preferences on media...the shiny silver ones work very well for me...i Sharpie them to death~ :)

What's so special about CMC MAG? Nothing!! Maybe I'll buy Memorex one day, when pigs fly, LOL. Since everybody is throwing the pictures in here, I'll throw in my 2 cents.

And here is another wonderful scan from MAXELL002 (8X DVD+R mij Hitachi) I burned today. Freaken awesome... that's all I can say.

Alkohol, that Maxell scan is sweet. I scanned a Maxell MIT R03 this morning an got a respectable 97.1%. Not at home at the moment or I would upload the scan. Good just the same.

PPills, I too use a NEC 3520aw and have noticed that my CD Speed quality scans show high Pie scores. Pif is similar to what you post. I use RitekG05 and my PIE's run from 80 to just under 200 max no matter what speed I burn at although the total PIE's drop as burn speed increases. What I wonder about is the ability of the NEC as a reader for the quality tests. Another issue is I've tried rescanning the same disk and you would think that I would get identical scores and graphs but that is not the case. I've also found that after getting a particulary bad scan that rebooting the computer and scanning again, the scores were back into the 90's for quality. So my questions are how reliable CD Speed really is if I can't get repeatable scans on the same disk more than once and does the burner used affect how they will score? Pretty confusing sometimes.
