I saw on one of the many posts a list of good and bad media but i cannot find it again (should have cut and pasted). I have been having problems with skipping and freezing as well as a couple of failed burns and i know it is because I have been using cheap, cheap media. I know that Ritek and verbatum have been mentionned as good but are there others that I should be looking for?
thanks

I use verbatim but there are other things you may need to do besides buying good dvds to prevent making coasterz..

1. Defrag once a week
2. Burn at half speed

Just bought a new computer so everything is up-to-date. Have been burning at 2x, and using DVD Shrink and Nero. Have yet to try dvd dycrpter and dvd 43 but have both installed and ready to go. The media is so cheap i can't even find the kind on it as i threw away the sleeve the covered the dvd's.

Current ver. of Fab decrypter+shrink+nero= a backup of every movie on the market. Now if shrink doesn't analyze use VOB banker then shrink. Best part of all these programz... THERE FREE

DVD Decrypter/No further updates
DVD 43/ Very slow updates
Any dvd/ NOT FREE but if you insist on paying for software, worth every penny..

NEC 16x (burn at 8x)

I use DVD Decrypter to rip and burn cos i have no problems,i also use shrink.I use cheap media,i have a pioneer 108 which will take anything.Your burning at the right speeds anyway, i will burn at 4 speed and have no problems at all.My choice of media is tuffdisc 8 speeds,i did use there 4 speed but cant get them now.You dont state what drive you use but you cant beat a pioneer.Cheap media and cheap drive.

sorry if this is a dumb question but what does it mean when someone said to defrag?

it means to "defragment" your hard drive...~ :)

windows has a built in defragment program and it is found at:

start. programs. accessories. system tools..disk defragmenter~

i use Diskkeeper myself and have found it works VERY well for defragmenting my hard drives...also, there is a "set it and forget it" option that will automatically start once u schedule it in...

just something to consider...but, the windows disk defragmenter will do the job too~ :)

oh I already knew about that then... I thought they meant something else. What does defragging have to do with DVD burning? Is it to organize the disk drive for better use of space?

..yup, instead of having bits of files spread across different bits of the hard disc (ie 'fragmented'), they're reordered so as to be 'contiguous'. The heads in the hard drive then don't have to fight across other data to get bits of files when needed..

dougga22: Use this free handy program to ID your blank discs:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...

Most brands of media are outsourced. This means a brand name like Memorex +8x can have 2-4+ different manufacturers for them. And believe me,quality will vary between all those manufacturers.

I buy local/on sale media. By looking at those outer shrink wrappers for Made in Japan, you can get the quality stuff.Taiwan can also make some good quality discs, but can make some total junk. Here's what I look for:

Fuji- Definitely the ones made in Japan
Sony-8x speed very good, but I still look for the japanese spindles.
Maxell: The japanese spindles will be hitachis while majority of taiwanese will be riteks. Slight chance for cmags on the maxell dash taiwanese spindles-mainly canada for now.
Office Depot 8x: Riteks. Sweet price when on sale. The +16x are ricohjpns.

Any other brands like philips/tdks/memosux/other store brand media-forget it.More chances for crap on those.

Gotta definitely check your hard drive to see if it needs to be defragged.Dvd ripping can put a heavy toll on her. I average twice a week per computer. If you do a backup here and there or do a backup and get rid of the files emediately, not so much defragging. But if you do a backup-make a lot of extra copies, then definitely keep an eye for when it needs defragging.

I have recently bought over 200 of Taiyo Yuden 4x of the first 100 had 2 bad coasters, but due to user error. Taiyo Yuden rocks I do believe its the best out there. In Ref to defrag it all depends on how much of free space you have on your drive. I only defrag once every 6 months, depends on how much is stored on HD. I have a 80gb HD but only use less than 50gb. Supermedia.store is the place to get your dvd-+ media. I recently ordered Ty 4x and got the Ty G03 which can burn at 16x.

@ creaky and kivory666 ......... I bought some Verbatim DVD+R's at Sam's Club and I think I got a good deal ($14.87 + tax per 50 pk). I got home and the code reads MCC-003-000. Are these the good ones? Hope so, I bought 150 of them. Thanks for the response in advance. The label indicated that they were made by MCC, that is why I purchased them.

@brizzo - Ritek and Ridata media is pretty good, but I would stay away from the Princo. Princo is CMC MAG, which is very crappy media!
