I have made a backup of this movie three times, twice with my disk and once with a friends. On all three copies there is one skip during playback around the 48 minute mark. I used shrink to extract the movie and decrypter to burn. Also, on one I used decrypter to extract, shrink to compress, and nero to burn. Is there some copy protection that would not removed that could cause this type of skip during playback? If not then what else could the problem be?

Thanks for your help.

I think the source disc had a scratch or smudge on it, or possibly you've applied too much compression to the backup...that is why you see the skip. If it were copy protection, you would've recieved an error at some point.

Yeah its probably the disc. I'd had problems with movies like that before and when I exchange them with another one, they work.

I thought it may have been a smudge or scratch on my disk, but I borrowed a friends and it has the skip in the exact same spot. As for the compression level it is about 58%.

No.
This is typically caused by....
1) Burning your backup too fast
2) Burning too close to the outer edge of the DVD
3) Use of poor quality media
4) Outdated firmware/software
5) Possible incompatbility between player and media

To reduce the occurance...
1) Try to burn your backup at 4X
2) When using dvdshrink reduce the output file size, have it produce a custom output file size of 4300MB
3) Use good quality media, any manufactured in Japan
4) Update your burner's firmware, update the software you use to burn your backup with
5) Get a newer upto date DVD player with mulit-media playback support, or use DVD+R media and apply booktyping (fools player into identifying the media as a DVD-ROM, your burner and software must support booktyping)

thanks for the replys.

To John:

1) I burn at 4x maximum
2) I have shrink set to 4300
3) I use sony dvd-r japan
4) I have BenQ DW 1640 with firmware BSMB
5) My player is Sony DVP NS575P

It seems the only possibility there is a compatibility issue between the player/media, so I will give +R/booktyping a shot.

Thanks again

I got some maxell dvd+r japan, set decrypter to booktype and the skip still occurs in the exact same spot. Any other ideas?

58% is alot of compression for a movie...try the Deep Analysis and AEC controls, this will add a considerable amount of time to the backup process but may get rid of your problem.

I always do deep analysis and I have tried with both default smooth and max smoothness, even tried 2x burn speed.

The compression level is not the source of the skip, but just for future reference how would I lower the amount of compression (besides using dl media)? It's bare bone: main movie, 5.1, and English subtitles only.

You could use the start/stop frames feature in DVD Shrink. Here is a guide: http://www.dvdshrink.info/reauthor_intermediate.php .

If you are familiar with DVD Shrink you can skip through the guide to the part about start/stop frames.
