Which brand is better out of the three? Melody (CMC), Intact (Prodisc), or Laser?
And are -R's or +R's better? For say burning movies and/or data?

The answer to your question is none of the above. The preferred brand in afterdawn are taiyo yuden and verbratim.
Melody (CMC) Intact (Prodisc) or Laser are consider crap dvd media.
I hope doc k666 will come along and give you some advises on these.

As for the Rs...I ALWAYS go with the +Rs.
Never again, -R's! Never again!

Have to agree with all of the above, I only use Ricoh + media. Rarely lets me down. Prodisc & CMC Mag make the poorest media. I would not touch them with a barge pole!

Seriously speaking though: Obviously if -all- CMCs were shit, they would be pulled from the market. They must be good/okay for something.. What is it?
Giving data discs to people you don't like?

They make them because people buy them! It is almost impossible to pull them from the shelves, not many people know how bad they really are! Ask in PC world what media they would recommend for burning dvds, you may be surprised at their amazing lack of knowledge.
Mind you, that goes for anything you ask at PC world!
LOL!!!

I will have to agree with Pulsar on media. I use DVD+R & only Taiyo Yuden made, or Verbatims, maybe Maxell if they are MIJ. IF I ever use a DVD-R because a Family member's player won't play a DVD+R, I use Maxell that code as RITEKG05. They are decent DVD-R media, the Imations, Memorex, Khypermedia, etc. are all very poor quality & should be avoided! Good Coasters & Frisbees! LOL. Seriously, don't buy them unless you want problems. Ironically, you can buy the GOOD stuff at a Local Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, etc, when they're on Sale for less money than the Crappy media. Go Figure. Supply & Demand! More people buy the good stuff, so they sell more, that means they can offer a lower price!
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

+R is better if your burner supports booktyping. All my backups are booktyped DVD-ROM on a +R disc. A disc booktyped DVD-ROM will play in more standalone players then either a -R or +R.

henryting's initial suggestion on the aforementioned 3 medias is RIGHT ON ThE MONEY~! :) all 3 are poor media...with the LAST one "Laser" in the 8x DVD-R format being a FAKE TAIYO YUDEN coding...so in MY opinion from worst to less bad...
1. Laser (in 8x speed DVD-R FAKE TY coding..made in friggin Hong Kong...NOT GOOD MEDIA...in the 4x rated speed, piss poor media made by Princo and Optodisc...not good)
2. Melody (CMC Mag)...don't need to say much here, equally as bad as memosux's CMC MAGs)
3. Intact(prodisc)...while i don't consider prodisc GOOD even at the farthest stretch of imagination, they are better than the 2 mentioned above...still..you could do A LOT better...
finally @hisokano1
if you booktype your DVD+R to dvd-rom, your ps2 SHOULD play them...i can't confirm this as i don't own a PS2, so i wouldn't know..but the general rule of dvd-rom (booktyped from dvd+r) SHOULD apply~
