Use DVD Shrink, it's very easy to use.. and a whole forum to itself, so then if you need help with anything there are a lot of experts to help you out.

DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, while still excellent programs, are no longer being updated, therefore you will need the help of one or two other programs to accomplish your goal. As Rotary stated you can get AnyDVD, it is a pay program but is top of the line and can be used with Nero or DVD Shrink.
Here is a list of some free programs:
1. DVD43...works like AnyDVD, running the background stripping the copy protection.
2. DVDFab Decrypter...rips, and rips only, to HDD for editing with either DVD Shrink or Nero.
Here are some guides on how to use the above mentioned programs. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm

Copy protection perhaps??? What movie(s) are trying to backup? You said you got to 22% in one burn...what error message did it give you, word for word.

ok, i think i found where the problem happens....i can can exact copy DVDs, but when i try to "recode" with Nero or use the "advanced" option on DVDxCopy it freezes. So im guessing either it is having some problem picking piece by piece what it wants to read, or either something when it tries to compress the files. I would just use exact copy each time, but i want to compress the files so i can fit them onto one disc

A system lock up could be result of insufficient ram to run the processes. How much RAm do you have and what processor.
The general consensus is that you should have a minimum of 512mb of ram. I heartily recommend at least a gig as backups are very CPU intensive.

it says: PC mobile AMD Athlon (tm) XP 2200+ 1.79 GHz, 448 MB of RAM. but the system requirements say a minimum of 256MB so i thought i would be fine

maybe it's heat-related (i spend hours online each day with my laptop and my legs are always real warm!). try propping up the back of the laptop with something, to improve heat dissipation

Is it connected to USB1.1 or a USB2? USB1.1 has difficulty at transfer rate where burning/reading is concerned.

Well at least you have more ram than 256, so all is not lost. If possible I would get an upgrade in ram in the future. Heat, like creaky indicates could be an issue as well. Make sure that you are not doing anything else during the burn. If you have to put a small fan blowing on it to help disipate the heat during the burn.

Yep there has been issues over transfer rate with USB1.1, USB2 can transfer up to 40X faster. Firewire is SAID to be quicker, but it is not necssarily the case in a lot of applications!
Personally, I do not trust USB as a reliable way of transferring info, it is good, but I got an IDE/PCI card to connect 2 of my burners. Many people have external burners, USB or enclosure & have no problems.

yeah, i got 2 USB2.0 enclosures, Belkin ones, and they're faultless and hold 2 of my burners. i switch them on only when needed and whenever i've finished with either of them i'm able to just power off whichever enclosure and XP just copes correctly. Unless of course i turn one off while Nero is burning on the other one, that (unsurprisingly) tends to crash Nero and the burn :)
i do often read that not all USB2.0 enclosures use decent chipsets though and cause ppl almighty problems. As to firewire i've never had need to use it; my new laptop has it but it's unused
