I received a Sony DRU-810a DVD-R DVD+R internal rewritable drive for a Chrismas present. I installed it and it works fine on standadrd 4.7 GB blanks. But I burned 2 Memorex DVD+R 8.5 GB double layer disks and I can't fast foward or reverse while playing the disk. The picture freezes up while I'm doing so, and it also freezes up on its own occasionaly as the disk is playing? I have a JVC DVD player. I couldn't find any DVD-R double layer blanks sold locally so I can't find out if that makes a difference.

Forget memorex, they suck & forget DL discs at the mo', they are way too expensive. Just use single layer verbatim +life discs, Taiyo Yuden, Ritek & you will not go far wrong. I only use ricoh + format. Not any failures in over 600 odd burns!

Read this thread on Memosux discs, you will see what I mean!

Shame you got a Sony, should have got a Liteon, BenQ, Pioneer, plextor or litescribe. I guess the person who got it for you did not know which one to buy! Bummer.

If you are going to use DL discs, the ONLY ones worth a rat's patootie are Verbatim. I've burned several hundred of 'em with my BenQ DW1640 ... no coasters and excellent playability.

As far as the Sony drive goes .. not too bad but they are known for DL issues .. and, as far as I'm concerned, far too difficult to upgrade the firmware. All in all, not bad for a present though.

@ramblerram

Make sure your DRU 810A has the most current firmware up-to-date. I've had my DRU710A for over 14 months and it has been burning flawlessly, regardless if it's DVD+R, DVD-R or DVD+R DL -- so far so good, it has never let me down.

Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2179 and get the latest firmware 1.0D for your burner, if you haven't done so. On the other hand, I believe your DRU810A is an OEM of Benq 1640.

Yes the sony DRU-810A is a rebadged benq. Get rid of those memosux discs and get some verbatim DL media and keep burn speed to 2.4x and you should be ok.

Yes ricohjpn imo is even better than ritek. Ritek actually makes them at ricoh's specs. You could say ritek's tools and ricoh's blueprints.

My Plextor burns the Dls the best as far as quality readings not that my LG, NEC are all that shabby. But nothing but Verbatims at 2.4x. The other DLs wasted my money. Happy burning. ChrisC

thelox714,

Although those ricohjpn's are good second class media they are still not first class like verbatim or TY.

Actually the Sony DRU-810a is a rebadged BenQ 1640. See link below.

http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=273

And it is my experience to use DL media from Verbatim only. Using any other media is a cr*pshoot.

I have 20+ Ritek DL's sitting around and the 1640 can't seem to handle them with the original configuration of the drive. I have not disabled solidburn or anything, but many 1640 users have complained that the 1640 does not support Ritek DL media.

On another thread someone pointed out Best Buy has Verbatim DVD+ DL's on sale. According to their Website, for a ten pack it is $19.99. That's a good deal for quality DL media.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7142157&type=produc...

If I had your Sony DRU-810a, I would just use the Verbatim DVD+ DL and booktype it DVD-ROM.

My BenQ DW1640 seems to burn the 2.4x Verbatim DVD+R DL discs even better at 8x than at 2.4x ...

I always burn everything else at MAXIMUM SPEED .. For some reason, I get the best results that way ...

I agree. The 1640 does not like to burn slow. I think one of the recent firmwares was released to help it burn better at slow speeds. I'd rather burn faster anyway! :)
