I have a Benq 1640 (OEM) works very well with Verbatim DVD+R DL at 6x speed. I m using clone dvd to copy lenthy movie to DVD-9. Then engine can be either internal engine or Nero engine.

I just update the firmware from Benq.com. The published date is Dec. 23 2005. The update was successfully.

http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=...

Lately, I bought memorex DVD+R DL 2.4x at office depot. It was 15 pack for $25. I would like to have 1 to 1 copy without compression.

But, the clone dvd does not work well with this memorex DVD+R DL. Here is the message:
Filed to burn the disk, please have a try to switch burn engine, or create ISO file first then burn with the OEM DVD burn software.

I have select bout internal engine and Nero engine. I still got the same message.

I also down loaed qsuite from benq.com. The test from qsuite indicate the DVD+R DL does not work at the 2.4x speed.

I am able to burn dvd that is less than 4.7 G to single layer dvd without error. Is this becuase of the memorex dvd+r DL? I did not have problem with Verbatim dvd+r DL.

Does any one know what I should do to have 1 to 1 copy?

Download DVDdecrypter here: http://mrbass.org/dvdrip/

Then follow this guide:

This should get it for you.

I've got the verbatim +r dl 2.4x and DVD Decrypter does a fine job using Mode ISO read and Mode ISO write.

I know Nero has trouble with the layer break, not sure about CloneDVD.
I also haven't tried the riteks, but seen many peeps with the 1640 that has no trouble with them-using DVD Decrypter.

Another option: Rip using DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read to hard drive.
Open up IMGburn and locate the mds files and burn. Imgburn was created by the same author of dvd decrypter: LightningUK,just doesn't have a ripping function. It works just like dvd decrypter's Mode ISO write mode.It can even booktype!

hi limingy,

i have stated in MANY other posts of mine that it SEEMS like the "other brands" that use the RitekD01 coded media seem to NOT PLAY WELL with many different burners... :)

i have had nothing but success using my Ridata RitekD01s, but i have a few seasoned veterans in the burning game that HAVE used memorex, fujifilm, dynex, etc. with the RitekD01 coding with VERY POOR results~ i don't know exactly what is up with the quality control on Ritek SOLD media to other companies for rebranding and public sale; but i have come to the conclusion, at least among my peers that i compare "notes" with, that MANY problems arise with the DVD+R DL RitekD01 coded media IF IT IS NOT FROM RIDATA~ :) this is ONLY A PERSONAL OBSERVATION among me and my close peers that have 1,000+ burns under their belt and i KNOW i can be confident in ruling out "other factors" or "user error"~

as to the Benq 1640, i have that drive as well and i've noticed that this particular drive LOVES the Verbatim DLs, so after my first few Verb burns on the Benq, i have STUCK WITH VERBATIM ON THIS DRIVE, exclusively, NO ERRORS, FLAWLESS 1:1 BURNS...no worries~

i always stick to "what works well for me"...if it ain't broke, don't fix it as the saying goes....

Benq 1640 + Verbatim DVD+R DL media = 100% success rate~ FOR ME

i have no need to "try" the Ritek DL media on the Benq cuz it's pointless for me...i have something that works flawlessly in my Verbatim DLs..so, why change?

i think this Benq drive has a particular "liking" to these Verb DLs too, some drives "like" some media "better" than other drives...whether that's dependent on firmware or not, who cares?

i'm using BSOB firmware on MY Benq-1640 (which is the same as yours, dated 12-23-05)...i've got about 110 burns so far on Verbatim DVD+R DL media with 100% success..not a SINGLE coaster in over 10 packs (i buy the Verbs in a 10-piece spindle and i've gone through 10+ spindles already last month) :)

so, my recommendation to you on that Benq 1640, STICK WITH THE Verbatim DLs...Memorex is a "dirty word" in MY HOUSE, so i wouldn't even consider buying them EVEN IF THE MEDIA ID CODING IS RITEKD01...

whereas SOME people base EVERYTHING on media ID coding...this can and HAS varied to a great extent with my own personal tests and the tests of my peers have concluded the same thing...

bottom line: JUST BECAUSE THE MEDIA ID CODING IS IDENTICAL on 2 separate different companies media (rebranded and sold as memorex in this case), DOES NOT MEAN they are identical in quality.

i can argue this point, from MY OWN findings/conclusions and the results of my trusted peers till the cows come home, but it's not worth it...just believe me when i tell you the "bottom line" from above... :) i've taken the "guesswork" out of it already based on MY OWN tests, if the memorex DLs do not work for you, even if they are the RitekD01 coded ones...it's because the quality is NOT THE SAME as the Ridata RitekD01s that I have used (60+) with excellent results~ no "coasters" yet to date (that were not MY OWN FAULT) :)

consistency is KEY here in burning...stick with what works...and in YOUR case, with the same drive as me, use the Verb DLs and you shall be happy~

docTY~

As a BenQ 1640 owner I can tell you that this burner does not like Ritek DVD+ DL media. If your Memorex media lists Ritek as the manufacturer, I'd venture to say that is the problem.

Stick with Verbatim DVD+ DL media and booktype it DVD-ROM. Best Buy has Verbatim's on sale now. Check out the link below.

Thanks for your inforamtion. I will use Verbatin DVD+R DL.

I also experinced the same to my NEW burner too.

Newegg has verbatim up to 6x DVD+R DL for sale, 10 dvds pack for $25.
Newegg had Ridata 100 dvd pack up to 16x DVD+R single layer for sale. $20.

Do u think Ridata 16x DVD+R will work with Benq 1640?

I know for a fact that Ridata DVD+ 16X will work with the BenQ 1640. I bought a spindle of 100 a couple weeks ago from newegg too, and they burn rather well. :)

By the way, those NewEgg Ridata DVD+R's ID as Ritek 04.

When using QSuite 2.1's Qscan to test the Ritek 04 disc, it states that the best speed for burning is 8X. But I can tell you that burning 16X on this disc matches the quality playback as if it were burned 8X.

This is to confirm that 2.4 x memorex DVD+R DL does not work with Benq 1640. I just burned a verbatim DVD+R DL at the speed of 4x.

1. How can I burn the dvd at the speed of 6x with my Benq 1640? The verbatim box indicates it is up to 6x depends on the burner.

2. Do I still have to create ISO files from dvd to disk by dvddecrypter then burn the dvd with either dvddecrypter or Imgtool Burn? Can I complete the cycle just with Imgtool? Which would create temp file on disk then burn dvd from the disk file. This is how clone dvd work. But, the compressed image from clone dvd is not as good so shrinkdvd.

3. Can i increase the buffer size for the software CloneDVD, shrink dvd, Imgtool Burn? I like the dvddecrypter for the buffer size feature.

4. Is there quality loss from the above software with 1:1 copy?

5. I would open a thread about Benq QSuite and Benq 1640, if I can not find a thread about it. I like to have more informaiton about QSuite and what it can help me. Especially, the overspeed set. I enabled it once by QSuite. But, CloneDVD does not create any image on the DVD+R DL and indicates the burn succesful. I end up re install the BSOB firmware.
